I bought a Gunsons Timestrobe many years ago and it is still going strong. For personal and semi-pro use I don't think there is much to beat it.

I have the Draper one. It cost me about a tenner from my trusty local motor factor and it does the job. Practical Classics reviewed it when they tested various timing lights.

Oddly enough this month's Classics magazine has a group test. I have a Gunson, just a cheapy though not their pro one which appears to be more sturdy.

Hi Bill, I used a bog-standard neon strobe light for years. They always worked fine except in sunlight. You can imagine it was a bit of a pain waiting until sunset to do the timing checks. It was cheap to buy though. And rugged. I seem to remember buying it in 1980.
However I now have a Gunson's Heavy Duty Workshop timing light. This is fantastic ! O.K. it needs +12V from the battery to power it but it picks off the number 1 pot spark signal from the clip-over lead detector and you can see the timing mark on the crank pulley in bright sunlight.
It also has a clever feature for modern cars that only have a TDC marker that you can twiddle a knob on the gun and check dynamic timing !
I must remember to set this to zero for the Dolomite !
O.K. it isn't cheap but for wonderful functionality it gets full marks.
If you can get down to TDCIR I'll give you a demo.
Let me know,
HTH,

Thanks for all the advice folks, looks like a Gunson will do the job.
They have 4 in their current range, list prices from £44 to £213!!
G4113 - £43.69
77008 - £77.78
G4133 £133.32
G4123 - £213.09

Tony - which one do you have? (love the user name!).

Hi Bill, Yes mine is the G4133. I'm sure I didn't pay anything like that £133 for it, but it was 2 (?) years ago now . I got it from the local Motor factors so you'll probably find prices are quite competitive if you shop around . I wonder if you could get a BOGOF deal ( Buy One Get One Free !) :D
Good Luck, Tony TDC 0091.

Excellent, thanks Tony. The prices I quoted were from the Gunson website, so I don't expect to pay anything like that! :)
