New Forum Member and new '74 Toledo purchase

#1 Post by toledo_terry »

Hi all,

Just wanted to say Hello! I have just purchased my first Triumph, a '74 1300 Toledo. She's in really good shape - 27,000 miles from new, 2 owners, but needs some restorative action as she's been sat in a barn for nigh on 20 years - at least she was kept dry.

I need to replace the clutch master cylinder. Being new to Triumphs, are the master cylinders interchangeable between the Toledo 1300 and the Dolomite 1300?

Many Thanks

Terry

Hi Terry,

Welcome to the forum!! :P Always great to have more Toledo owners!! :)

I would believe that the master cylinders are the same between the Disk front brake Tolly and the Dolly 1300. However, I think some Dolomites towards the end had dual split brakes and a tandem master cylinder. Someone should be able to come along and clear up any doubt.

Did you buy your car from eBay by any chance? Its looks famililar to a car which appeared on there reasently. :o

Happy Forum-ing

Jordan :D

Hi Jordan,

Thanks for the info.

I did indeed buy the car from eBay. Such an easy and honest purchase - the seller couldn't have been better! He bought the car from an elderly lady 19 years ago and then put it into storage in his barn.

The clutch master cylinders are the same on Toledo and Dolly 1300 (also 1500 Dolly I think) and AFAIK are the same as those now supplied for Herald and Spitfire too.

Dolomite 1300 and 1850/1850HL have the same clutch master cylinder.
You should not use a Spitfire m/cylinder because the reservoir is angled to allow for the non horizontal cylinder installation (an angled
reservoir used on a Dolomite will greatly restrict the capacity....)

I am well aware that the original Herald and Spit cylinders had the angled reservoir to cope with the installation, however these are almost unobtainable now and nearly everybody sells the 90 degree ones for the small chassis cars and you just have to accept a slightly lower reservoir level as a consequence. What is certain is the repair kit is the same, Girling SP1963 IIRC.

Hi all,

I'll post some pictures up shortly.

I decided to rebuild the master cylinder after all. When I opened it up I found perished seals and the fluid had turned black.

Master Cylinder re-installed and fluids all flushed and bled - I used an Eezibleed.

Engine running and I can move the gearlever through the gears, but, that's without me depressing the clutch pedal. Clutch pedal does absolutely nothing. Surely I shouldn't be able to move through the gears with the engine running so any idea what's going on? I can only think that clutch isn't releasing for some reason.

Car has been stood for around 19 years in a dry barn. She has 27,000 miles on the clock and is in pretty good shape - no rust!

Thanks

I never heard of a clutch sticking off, it really can't happen! There are only 2 possibilities here, either the gears aren't selecting when you think they are or the clutch is so worn out that no drive whatsoever is transmitted. Alright, one more, the centre drive plate may have broken up, possibly during a violent abortive attempt to free a stuck ON clutch!

The elderly chap I bought it off said that he hadn't used it since the early 90's (and I can well believe it). He ran it (just started it up) every week, but perhaps only once or twice over the last 6 months or so. Clutch had been working, but, he said as he tried to move it before I bought it, pedal went to floor and didn't return. It is returning now but no engagement.
