well well well, here we go again ladies and gentlemen. i am very very sorry that it has taken so long, i started a new job in March, including moving away from home and everything that comes with it so unfortunately the dolomite took a back seat for a while :(. but yet, here i am trying my best to get stuff done and hopefully i will get some momentum up!

after much deliberation I decided that it was best to get the exhaust built. this is one of(if not, the last) major fabrication job left which will require welding on the shell itself. So to prevent any faux pas regarding welding onto a painted shell, this is the next step.

anyway, to the pictures! just in case you have forgotten what it looks like....

Image

The next step is to get the exhaust built. This will be done by a chap called Kevin who runs BM Wizard in Oswestry. He is a BMW specialist but also does custom exhausts. In my ringing around i spoke to 5 or 6 seperate fabricators, all of which gave off varying degrees of enthusiasm and knowledge about a) dolomites and b) the engine itself.

One of them even asked me "oh is that the 6 cylinder engine? the straight 6?"

IN contrast Kevin exuded enthusiasm to me and we ended up spending a couple of hours on the phone(spread over a couple of phone calls) talking about the project itself and how he would go about the design process and such.

To facilitate this, we had to fit the gearbox. We struggled for a while to fit it but then realised that when me and Alan cut the tail housing about we never trial fitted it to the car.......

Image

as you can see, the gear remote is fouling against the tunnel. oh s##t, we thought.

After a few frantic conversations, and panicked conversations with Alan himself, we decided to make the gearbox fit...

So we marked it out....

Image

and ended up with a hole!

Image

as you can see, it ended up fitting quite well! it was agreed that when 90% of the car is custom built, I am bound to come across problems like this. the strength that was cut out isn't consequential in terms of the structural integrity of the shell when it isnt going to be driven and that strength will be returned in some fashion before its painted.

Image

we then bundled it onto a trailer and took it to Oswestry.

Image

and there it is awaiting its next big step!

exciting things to come :D

hey chaps and chapettes!

exciting stuff is happening!

remember when I delivered the car to a chap called Kevin in Oswestry?

well, this is what he came up with.

Image

looks good eh?

Image

Image

what do you all think?

i am now given the task to get a running engine together and then the second half of the exhaust can be built. This is so he can properly spec the exhaust against track day noise limits. Kevin has given me a year to do this.....whether that happens or not we shall see :P

watch this space!

Is there anyone there?

I post these pictures up because I am told that people like to see them.

I am an avid fan of this forum and the help it gives to new and old owners of our cars alike, but at times I can certainly see why individuals have got disgruntled and, for want of a better word, left.

I will continue to post the pictures as it gives me an accurate timeline of what I am doing/going to do to KLJ.

I hope this doesn't ruffle any feathers....

Yes ...

This is an interesting project.

I have a T9 'box in an 1850, it was necessary to shorten the remote by 74mm, thereby achieving a gear lever location akin to a Sprint.
For the gearstick I welded a Dolomite three rail straight section onto a Sierra lower part of the g'stick. It was necessary to heat and bend the Sierra bit
to give what has proved to be a very good solution. A Sierra gearstick on its own is too short to be reached comfortably.

Rather than use a Dolomite o/d mount, I went for the sturdier Sierra item, which fits a Dolomite cross member with some work, but not too much :) .

I am thinking you will not be using the cable operated handbrake since an hydraulic alternative is available?

progress on the gearbox mount.

we are using a standard sprint mount (just turned round to face the other way)

this piece of box section then sits on top of it...

Image

and then an uprated gearbox mount for the type9 itself sits on top of this...

Image

here you can see the whole assembly. gearbox at the top, type9 mount in the middle on top of the box section and then the sprint mount underneath.

Image

this is looking from the back (towards the front)

Image

off the car and in the vice ready for welding

Image

welded!

Image

and here is the complete assembly. fully welded up. the engine and gearbox are now supported on their own mounts :)

Image

more progress next week!

Thanks Ian :).

we did it like this.

Nooo hydraulic clutch is a a good solution so will be going that route.

Depends on your reason for doing so. I'm definately an advocate for it as you know but it is expensive.
