Not only are you dealing with the DVLA but also a bank . Despite what the experts on the BBC may claim, changing or transferring DDs is fraught.
How does this affect Historic vehicles? When the current tax disc expires on my car will I still have to go to the PO to renew as before
or will this be done automatically from now on?
It was the insurance companies who stopped the idea (about 30 years ago) to put VED and third party insurance cover onto fuel.
A pity. Pay as you go is surely the fairest system.
thanks,
Ian.
They won't just log a Historic renewal automatically since the car still needs to be checked for insurance and MOT.
But you don't need to go to the PO, doing it online takes a few seconds and its not like you have to worry about banking security online with a Historic renewal!

steve, it will be one DD for each car this will also make it easier to manage costs for those on a budget or who have OCD about monthly running costs and it will make it easier to cancel a DD if you sell a car.
I think the plan is to have the cars reg or part of it as part of the DD reference number.

Thanks,
I will continue to use the local PO because they get paid for each renewal which helps (albeit a tiny amount) to preserve their service and the local economy.

That's an interesting thought. My TR is tax and MOT exempt, so in effect it only needs insurance. What is the historic tax for?

Maybe so the government can keep track on what cars are using the roads?
If you failed to apply for 'historic' tax and carried on using the car no action could be taken as you haven't committed any offence!

Here's a thought, there is an offence on the statute book of "fail to display a tax disc"
I hope they've repealed it or we'll all be criminals!

I think there is an offence there somewhere. At one point recently, I got a nasty letter from DVLA about the black Toledo not being insured (it was, under my traders ins) cos it was still taxed (free) and they wanted me to a) insure it or b) sorn it and send back the free disc or they'd fine me £80. The car had no MOT at the time (or seats!) and was not being used but i sent the form back with details of the insurance and heard no more!
I reckon the reverse applies, as far as I can see there are only 2 possible states, taxed or SORNed and it doesn't matter that the tax is free and there is no physical evidence one way or the other, the car MUST be one or the other, just to keep their computer books straight and they'll fine you for not co-operating!

They should have done this years ago, the paper tax disc is pointless, it has been enforced by number plate recognition camaras for years anyway. Retaxing the dolly took me all of 5 minutes.
This is just, well how can I be polite? More mature people who are scared of computers.
Rubbish, complete and utter rubbish.
Where I live there are random cars abandoned and noting a very out of date visible sticker on a windscreen is the first step to take in getting the cars removed and scrapped.
I would go further - insurance disc, car tax disc and MOT disc ALL displayed at set points on the windscreen, and readable by automatic cameras. And the human eye. Make it an offence against the driver and the owner if they can't be read by the cameras.
Yes I'm old, but I'll wager I could teach you a few bits and bytes about computers..............
I believe through ANPR there will now be a concentrated revenue raising exercise through fines and back excise, there are so many cameras trained on our roads now it will be a simple case of instantly checking, and issuing fixed penalties for no tax, mot or insurance for every vehicle used on the road.
Polis turned up today following a call from a neighbour, they towed away a stolen Golf Tdi.
I asked them to check out a seemingly abandoned Mk3 Astra, I had checked online to find it was sorned , not insured, and no mot. They are going to call the registered owner and tell them to shift it pronto. Registered owner lives 3 miles away.
So much for online crap. If the Golf hadn't been stolen they would never have turned out.
