Water leak at inlet manifold

#1 Post by tractor boy »

Hi its tractorboy again! Just replaced both inlet manifold gaskets and O ring sealbetween manifold and cylinder head with new parts from rimmer bros. Cleaned all mating very carefully and used good quality sealant . Now got a small water leak from O ring. Do i need an O ring with a slightly larger cross section diameter to cure this leak which wasnt there before. Looking forward to some advice Tractor boy

Some of the aftermarket inlet gaskets are too thick, and make the tube "offset" so it doesn't seal.

Pull the thermostat housing and remove the bypass tube - looking down through the housing, are the holes concentric ? if the manifold is offset away from the pump cover thats the issue.

If I recall correctly the blue oem gaskets are the correct thickness, the black / dark grey are too thick and this can cause this issue as the tube is then angled rather than being perpendicular to the pump housing hole

There should be a recess in the manifold that helps locate the O ring too.
That O ring should be quite a fat section.
I dont use any sealant at all on that O ring, maybe just a bit of vaseline to stick it to the manifold
and make sure those surfaces are totally clean.

On the gaskets what Mike says is true. I tend to buy up old Payen head sets to get a good supply of good quality
OE gaskets. The 1850 manifold can go out of line so worth checking the 2 gasket faces are parallel.

Or upgrade to a TR7 manifold and HS6's which has a one piece gasket that I've never had any trouble with.

First time I did one on my my TR7 it took three times before I got those O rings to seal. They tend to slip out of the groove very easily. Be patient and do it again carefully taking care to see that they go in OK. The sealer may actually make them sticky and could make the problem worse.

Thanks for your replies. Will take it apart again this weekend and find a fatter o ring with same diameter and try again. From memory the replacement o ring from Rimmers did look a bit underfed!!! Tractorboy
