Dolly 1850 wishbone polly bushes

#1 Post by The Toad »

I got a question

I have bought a set of Polly bushes for the front end and the upper wishbone don't seem right but i need a second opinion.

I have fitted the split bush to the wishbone arms but when assembling the components, the arm passes over the threaded section of the wishbone shaft but is dead tight on the shaft itself and a certain amount of force would have to be applied to push the arm on to the shaft, but it would be dead tight and would not move on the shaft.

When I removed the old ones they were seized on so no comparison really.

What I think is the the the steel insert in the bush should just slide over the shaft nicely and pivot. Am I right or wrong or missed something out.

This has come up before....
apparently some makes don't fit at all (yet the sellers still continue to supply these  ). Send them back for a refund.

The best solution is to buy Superflex bushes, Chris Witor and Winns International both stock these.
Not only do they fit properly but they come with stainless steel centres. The bush pivots around said stainless steel centre.
(You fit the bushes first followed by the centres.)

The Sprint / 1850 have 2 different part numbers for the upper wishbone bushes. " Early " and " late " with the change point being 1976 onwards. The parts book doesn't give a chassis number change point.
Early ones are 153184; later ones are 119450, or the equivalent in poly; I also see that oversize ones are available. For worn arms maybe ?

I absolutely second Ian's recommendation. Super Flex are costly but they're worth every penny. Both Chris Witor and Wins offer discounts to TDC members for Super Flex bushes. The only other bushes I recommend are Polybush which are available from Jigsaw. Polybush offer a discount to TDC members if you order directly from them. Details of the Club discounts are available HERE in the "members only" section of the forum.

The early bushes dont have a locating lip to stop the arm moving off the bush, the late ones do. You can fit the later (better) bushes to an early car, the arms are the same - thats what i have done to mine. Late cars also have an extra bracket from the forward end of the wishbone bolt to the subframe, this can also be retrofitted but you will need to drill the subframe.
Your bushes are probably just slightly tight on the bolts, just clean the bolts up with some emery paper or ream the bush tubes out very slightly. They dont need to move freely around the bolts, the movement takes place between the polybush and sleeve, not the sleeve and bolt.
