Camshaft Sprocket Tab Washer

#1 Post by AlanH »

I was taking the camshaft out for a re-shim and when I got the tab washer off the timing chain sprocket there was a chunk missing.

The problem is I'm not sure if it came away when I took the washer off or not. So I'm not sure if it's in the engine.

I've had a poke about with my endoscope (which is not very good) and also a magnet without finding anything.

My current plan of action is to have a good poke around and, if that fails, take the timing cover off.

I would be grateful of any suggestions and if anybody can tell me where I can get a replacement?

Hi Alan; Good plan on looking for the missing bit. It may have dropped into the front part of the sump pan which is right underneath the timing cover. It might be worth draining the oil and having a poke around through the sump plug hole for the bit of metal first.
The part is known as a Locking Plate Part no 154161 - assuming this is a Sprint or 1850.
Here is an example of one source.

This is just one of many im sure but quick delivery on stuff ive had.
If you can see the length of chain and it doesnt have a pice of the washer on the inside you may have got lucky and its either in the sump or not there at all. Cover of will give you a better idea of course, but if its in the sump I doubt it would do any harm there.

Its pretty unlikely to come off without you noticing it.

I expect it went awol on a previous use....
Much more likely to break off when being refitted and bent back over the bolt head. I break the used
segments off before I reuse them.

At least it gives you the chance to reset and check the tensioner if you take the cover off.
