OHC engine number missing......

#1 Post by Mark-miwordz »

Good morning.

For the past couple of months I have been trying(half-heartedly I must admit) to find the engine number on the block I was going to rebuild into a reliable sprint thus keeping engine and bodyshell together. Now I have wire brushed the various ledges and flat surfaces and found nothing resembling this number and as separating head from block is proving more than a little bit difficult I am wondering if I should junk the lot and start with a different block.

So can anyone out there tell me of a position for the number other than on the carb side of the block between the core plugs?

Thanks for your help and sorry for bringing up the subject again.

Michael.

The only two places I've seen them are as per the photo...

I'm guessing you have an 1850 engine?
Sprintless for the first time in 35+ years. :boggle2: ... Still Sprintless.

Engines, Gearboxes, Overdrives etc. rebuilt. PM me.

Thanks Mart.

Yes those are the places I have been looking at very closely.I have even taken a couple of pictures to highlight the positions but can't see a chuffing thing.Even thought I might have scrubbed it too hard and worn away the numbers but can't imagine that.

Hi Michael, On my 1850 I found my engine number on the top face of the block, underneath the cylinder head and no numbers anywhere else. It was apparantly a service replacement unit.

Ahhh thanks for that.I'll try to expose that portion of the top face of the block before attacking it full on and destroying the whole head which is scrap now anyway.Time to start hammering again and bug the neighbours.

OK did that and found nothing. So I have a trashed head which doesn't bother me in the slightest and an unidentified 1850 block in reasonable condition and good for a rebuild.I'm thinking about drilling the cylinder head full of holes avoiding the block face until it is so weak that a good clout with a hammer will break off chunks leaving me with at least a good bottom end and maybe a new hiding place for the number.Should have applied for the V5 years ago when I bought the car really, that'll teach me.

Still open to suggestions though.

I have also seen them on the vertical bit between Marts circles.

Early 1850s it was on the head...so not much chance of it staying together then.
