Brooklands 1850hl 1980
Re: Brooklands 1850hl 1980
Thanks Jon.
I have a 3.63 diff coming from Wins tomorrow is there anything to watch out for when reinserting half shafts in the axle whay sort of grease is best for the bearings at the hub end?
The oil leak appears to be more from the oil seal of the crankshaft spreading back over the gearbox
I was able to confirm with the prop shaft off that the overdrive works but unfortunately confirmed that some of the transmission noise is coming from the gearbox which is chattery in 1st and reverse. There is also a very slight noise at idle.
Its the single rail as you said. Not sure whats a normal noise from these with the transmission tunnel out though.
Still while frustrating if the box is on its way at least I can fix the oil seal at the same time.
Could i split the overdrive of the box with it in situ to make the rest that bit less to handle or am I much better off removing it as a whole to replace the gearbox.
Haynes manual is worse than useless with the later cars. I expect thats why the diff drive flange nut was so damn tight to get off when I replaced the oil seal must have been wacked up to 90lb ft or more then when putting it back together when i left it lose it probably fell apart. Hope that's not what screwed the gearbox. I remember getting it out of the welders unit it didnt want to reverse I thought the hand brake had locked on as it went with a clunk.

Gear box out now and flywheel off.
Big leak from crankshaft oil seal which has been nicely coating the bell housing for some time.
Gearbox to be sent to forum legend and assessed / refurbed.
Looking forward to moving into reassembly hopefully soon.
About all i can do for now is fix the oil leak mount the new clutch and fit a new stereo so at least i have something to listen to when it all gets bolted back together.

Re: Brooklands 1850hl 1980
Second hand diff from Wins is now fitted. Refitted half shafts drums and replaced rear brake hose with braided and bled system.
Replaced crankshaft oil seal and gasket of oil seal housing which wrecked the sump gasket so now will have to replace that as well. Next backward step achieved by my low scale torque wrench snapping one of the oil seal housing bolts so will need to drill it and if I can find a small enough easy out remove it and replace that. I'm sure that replacement bolt will be hard to find!
Oh and fitted new lock to glove box

Re: Brooklands 1850hl 1980
Replaced both top front ball joints nice straight forward job.
Earlier issue with oil seal housing snapped bolt progress: drilled, used easy out, stripped thread of easy out drilled some more and snapped the next easy out of in the snapped bolt!
Got all that mess out but will need to re tap block thread as its now a mess.

Ouch....
Could it be that you didnt spot the oil seal housing has longer bolts in a couple of places? I think drilling it out
and fitting a helicoil is your best option...
Use the housing as a drill guide and carefully note the depth of the other matching hole. A magnet will pick up all the debris.
Easy outs are never good news...

Was one of the 2 longer ones that snapped that go iin the lower housing bolt holes just above the sump line (the ones that face the gearbox) got some new ones. Will have another go soon see what I xan do. Thanks for the suggestion re helicoil any idea what the thread size is on these bolts?

Looks about 1/4 unf but I'm not certain. It will be in the parts book.

It's really coming together now.
Re: Brooklands 1850hl 1980
For gasket removal Ive always used a sharp blade that can bend a bit. If its thick on the block use a sawing action to move the worst then shave it when theres a thin amount left. On the sump get the big bits off in the same way then a wire wheel in the drill will whip it off nicely (wear goggles with the wire brush bit, stuff flies off!)
Nice work BTW

Re: Brooklands 1850hl 1980
Where did you source your rear crank oil seal from?
Payen originals are good and I sourced a few of these from Cyprus...
Sadly some of the ones one sale dont have thr ight spring tension and do leak again pretty soon. Now is the time to do
it right...
Splendid work on the shiney bits btw...

They look quite smart better than in the pics really pleased with them.
You mentioned a Payen seal but unfortunately wasn't able to source one. Got this one from Rimmers. Hope its ok dont want to remove the housing again after the fight with the snapped bolt. But really dont want to have to remove the box again if it leaks.
Can the seal be replaced without removing the housing?
