Flasher cans mystery.

#1 Post by steve5 »

Any auto sparks out there can give me a clue to this. My flasher unit packed up, fitted another, tested ok until I pulled the hazard switch, the new can blew. Would this be a simple short in the switch?, where can I get a new one, thanks.

Sorry, Dolly 1500HL 1976.

Have you got the right flasher unit?
Theres two, one for the hazards and one for the flashers - the flashers one is rated for 2 x 21W bulbs, the hazard one for 4 x 21W. Which one did you replace?

I think it was 4x21, I will double check when I get home.

Ah, so the hazards should work even if the indicator flash unit is removed? odd.

Does sound like your hazard switch is playing up. Its the only point that the flasher and hazard circuits meet, so its a good bet for an odd problem like yours.

Matt is right. When you turn on the hazards, it also cuts off the live feed to the indicator stalk. There are separate flasher units for the indicators and the hazards. The indicator section of the Dolly Wiki HERE should help to explain how it all works and how to diagnose problems. It was useful when I was converting my later type hazard switch to the early one on my 1850.

Thanks for that. When I got home I gave the hazard switch a wiggle and found I could make it light up but all 4 lamps flashed very fast, so I found and unplugged the can fitted to the hazard switch and tried it on the indicator switch and it still flashed fast so it looks like that can was faulty. Oddly, I then tried the original 'fried' can back on the indicators and it worked OK, but the second fried can is still dead. I shall try and fit a new 4x21 to the hazard switch and see what happens. I probably need a new switch too. Cheers!
