HELP - inner bushes - bottom arms

#1 Post by simonhorton »

I'm replacing the inner bushes on my bottom arms

Rimmers do a poly bushes for them

Do I still need to use the rubber seals each side and the cup washers ?

Many thanks
Simon

Don't.

Get the OE rose joint bush. Try Fitchetts or Mick Dolphin. He may still have or have turned up some new track control
arms with rose joint bush already in place.

I have no experience of the bushes that Rimmers sell but I suspect the answer is no,
that is assuming that their poly bushes are like those sold by Superflex.

Having used them on my 1850 for seven years,
I can recommend they Superflex bushes. These replicate the movement of a rose joint (rather than a bonded rubber bush) and
furthermore avoid the weakness of the original design, which is it's reliance on water shields and seals.
Superflex bushes come with stainless steel centres.

I have several mites where the OE bushes have lasted in excess of 10 years.

If you want to rely on a random polymer mix that cant possible do both jobs in both planes like the
OE rose joint was designed to do then its up to you.

Me...I'm an engineer....(well applied physicist is close)...:-)

Ian and I will have to agree to disagree on this one...

I have a set currently fitted to my sprint - no issue found with them. I will say that there is very little movement of the arm within the horizontal axis, pictures attached during fitment of bushes + stainless insert or tube. Once fitted there is no need for the rubber seals + cup washers.

... and I thought it was only me that had these fitted to my 1850 ! These are actually on a long term test. There is no problem with the material of the bushes on either side after 4 years and 35,000 miles on an 1850 daily driver..
I can't do this at present but I would like to dismantle mine to see if there are any wear / witness marks on the inner fixing pivot bolt. If so this would be an indication of something more than up / down movement.
One thing I do know is that the fore / aft movement of that lower wishbone part is much reduced . I haven't replaced the outer tie rod bushes since, which must be a good thing.
Give me a a couple of weeks or so and I'll report back on this, since it is a hot topic.
So far I am a fan of poly bushes here !
And no. No extra shims or dust seals are needed.
HTH,
Tony.

I'm with Ian on this. I also have the Super Flex bushes on mine. They were fitted back in 2009 and I've had no issues with them. They're worth every penny.

thought id throw my 2p in for what its worth! I rebuilt my front suspension on my Toledo and used the rose type new old stock arms, worked perfectly for me, only trouble was the unavailability of the end dust caps but i used the ones from a spitfire front trunnion rebuild kit which are pretty much identical

Despite my scepticism I'm pleased the poly works for those that use them.

There will come a time when the rose joint is unobtanium....

I will concede that I would use a NOS bush if I wanted to use rubber bushes. Modern rubber just doesn't last so NOS would be my 2nd recommendation.
