I need to fit a screen chrome plastic trim to my windscreen rubber and its a job I have never done before bizarrely after
owning dollies so long.
Ive got this funny tool like a screwdriver with a small square ring on the end that's supposed to help.
Any tips?

Yep - throw it away! 
I've heard of people having success with these, but I've only tried to use one once, and it damaged the trim.
Use silicon spray, or washing up liquid, or anything like that and the good old thumb, it worked a treat for me last year.
Impossible without lube though.
I still need to seal the rubber, it leaks past the glass in three places.

I managed to do this with only a flat bladed screwdriver and plenty of care. Best to put the new trim in some hot water to soften it which will make it easier to fit.

What you need is one of these...
...which has a roller to push the trim into the rubber. Used in conjunction with a spot of baby oil. Used many times and much easier than thumbs.

You might not need to use the tool, depend how old the rubber is. I fitted one a couple of weeks ago to a new rubber and it went just easily using a bit of lubrication.

Try not to use washing up liquid, it attacks the rubber. Most brands are also high content salt, which is not good either!

For various reasons its an old stock seal and its been in the car some 7 or 8 years with no trim.
So it was a little stiff but a nice warm day and plenty of red rubber grease and it went in with odd use of the
loop tool, a couple of screwdrivers and some knackered thumbs.
The odd youtube video on old mini screens which have a very similar if not identical trim was also helpful.
I reckon you'd get good at it by your tenth one.

Not trying to be funny or clever but.....
Why not fit the trim into the seal (with the seal in place around the windscreen) before fitting the screen to the car?

Because it had already been in the car without the trim for a long time.....
On the basis of not fixing what isn't broken I didnt fancy taking it out. Anyway I reckon this type of trim is supposed to be fitted
screen in place...
Its not like the T2000 spitfire and stag metal type, which is pretty tough to fit with screen in place...

Okay.....
Out of curiosity I have consulted the BL workshop manual for the 1850
and it says the trim should be fitted to the seal before the windscreen is fitted.
(Manual AKM3628A, page 76.81.01)
