sprint Dutton B+

#1 Post by longboarder »

Hi all, been of this forum for a long time, what with ill health and then trying to wind up my business because f the health etc. Anyway, to the sprint powered kit car. It has proved to be ultra reliable, except the overdrive, but that is now sorted, nothing more then crumbling wiring in the tunnel. The engine is running superb, almost afraid to "fiddle". Rebuilt the SU carbs beginning of last winter, followed by a John Tilson set up, 2nd time got it right (ish). Fitted a electronic ignition unit from the landie people and a new cap and rotor to suit. Still running the straight pipe exhaust but now with a Kawasaki ZR12 silencer that came my way from a ex superbike rider for free. The car starts on the button and does take a few miles to settle down, then it goes and sounds awesome without being to loud. The car weighs less then 10 cwt. and the mid range torque as I heave away always brings a smile to my face (stupid grin). I recently did a job for a local tuner in return he put it on the rollers, 124bhp but he was afraid to touch those funny things (carbs) and couldn't find the ECU ! Today I went up on to Dartmoor and gave it some stick around the lovely stages I know of. Car went perfect, so then I nipped back down to Plymouth and sat on the cliff and had a 99. watching the ships come by. My only concern is what temp should it run at? I'm up at 200f I think thats 93c, doesn't get any hotter but should I turn the stat down a bit to get the fan to kick in sooner. Well thats all, unless any one knows how to get rid of backaxle back lash, it sort of spoils the car that slop on take up and over run. I suppose now I'm semi retired I have the time to DIY it.

I like a Slant to set in the middle of the gauge but they are all a bit variable on voltage stabs, gauges and senders.

As long as it it doesnt keep slowly rising and vent coolant all is well I suspect. I tend to set my leccy fans so that the car
shouldnt need it unless its stuck in traffic...

I'd have a look at u-js before condemning the diff but I suspect that's clutching at straws.

Good to have you back...

Welcome back to the forum. It would be a good idea to check your propshaft UJs first because they're easier to rebuild than the diff. Taking out the rear axle alone is a 2 hour job, maybe longer depending on the problems you might encounter on the way. Keep us posted. It sounds like it is running quite well.

I was talking to a friend who is rather good with gearboxes and diffs. Dropped him the idea of changing the ratio in my sprint axle. Poked his head under the car and twitched. Apparently the diff itself can't be unbolted, and has to be done with the axle out the car and it all makes it a bit more difficult. At that point I abandoned the idea (thought a TR7 engined toledo would work better with a 3.7 ratio diff rather than the tall 3.45, but there you go)

Just to cheer you up

I spoke with my elder brother, he knows lots even though he is in his 70's, (age wise and dress sense !) and he reckons the best way to do it is pull the lot out, so may put it off 'til the dark evenings come and that X factor thing, that means I can escape and hide in the cave and get oily   . Seems I should be running mid 80's degree C. not low 90's. Been advised to direct air into the rad more, seems it may be escaping around the sides of the rad, line of least resistance, so today I am cutting a template from 3 ply and if it works, will then use alloy sheet.

A TR7 engined toledo will be fine on a 3.45 diff.

What box are you going to use? A sprint wont do 60 in 2nd on a 3.45. A doly 1850 will do 65
on the small car box cos the lower ratios are a bit higher then the Sprint ones.

The 3.45 bigger diff is also a lot stronger. Only the one ratio is offered in Sprints.
To get the diff out of a Sprint axle case you need a spreader...

Thread drift....

I drove a TR7 engined dolly on the RBRR. It was OK, but not as zippy as expected (but I know it is a well looked after example)
On the basis the power output is not much more than an 1850, I think the diff ratio would be better as the 3.63 of the 1850. The stag 3.7 looked a handy alternative. After all the car will get used for the next RBRR, and assuming mot'd soonish will be our backup car for the 10CR in september. ie if either the spit suffers an issue (brands track session 5 days before the 10CR may not be a good idea, but such is life) or indeed it looks like torrential rain accross europe, in which case the more refined toledo will be pressed into action.

I like my cars to be north of 5000rpm (spit 6000+) when being "driven", they become rather more entertaining
