1850 breather hose rocker cover

#1 Post by Henk »

What's your opinion on the breather hose from rocker cover to carbs? Is it correct that it pollutes the carbs with oil residu?
I'm thinking of blocking the entry on the carbs and guide the breather hose to some sort of oil catch can.

I understand your thoughts as we did this on my son's SS1 with CVH engine and it works except the smell of the crankcase gases is not good. Would be better to have a sealed catch can with two holes in lid. Fit tube into one from rocker cover so it ends towards the bottom of the can. Take another from just inside top of can to the inlet manifold. Make sure the tube joints and can lid does not leak, so you have a sealed system which catches the oil deposits yet allows gases to be re-burnt. If you can fit baffling in the can for the oil droplets to be caught then so much the better. If you wanted to get really clever then fit a PCV valve from can to inlet manifold so high vacuum in the manifold does not suck too much crankcase gases through before the oil droplets have had time to collect in can.
