Rear engine mount

#1 Post by AlanH »

Just had a report from a garage saying that the 'rear engine mount needs replacing'. I'm assuming that he means the gearbox mount or is there another one I can't find (I'd rather look stupid here than at the garage!).

Gearbox mount....

We recently discussed alternatives. Have a look through some recent threads on the subject of gearbox mounts.

It's an auto box so it's a round one and is damaged around the central bolt. I think that Winns have some NOS.

However I have found some thing else, the offside front engine mount has only one bolt holding it to the subframe. The other hole does not line up at all. I wonder if something is out of kilter.

At the moment I have it in mind to support the engine and loosen all of the bolts (including the gearbox mount) and see if I can get then them to line up. However, I'm not sure how well these usually do fit.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The front mounts should all line up hole wise...but bolts can sometimes be difficult to get in.
Take a bit of the engine weight and try and wiggle the holes in subframe and mount into line with a long
screwdriver.

Also sometimes they get fitted incorrectly. The mounting bracket has a half moon cutout that should always go towards
the top.

Chris Witor has some mounts - at a price! Somebody on this very forum recommended using the Stag mount.

I was afraid of that.

As you can see they are way out. You can just see where the flange is on the other side.

Oh its an 1850....just loosen the nut on top, loosen the other sides nut and bolt a bit and it will wiggle round quite easilly if you take the load
under the sump a bit.

I have a good used Sprint auto gearbox mount (with or without crossmember) available if that's any use to you. Its not sloppy and is bone dry.
