Where the AE is embossed in a circle behind the front carb position, there will be a cast embossed figure '2' just to the right of it if it is a later head.

I think AE just numbered the gravity die No 2 when production was stepped up.

Simon, there is a difference between early pre '75 and late heads.

MikeyB had the same problem as me on his early head, this is a quote from my thread. viewtopic.php?f=19&t=27969&start=345
The later head from 75 had a bigger water jacket & they compensated for the metal loss on the inside by adding extra metal on the outside, it's kind of re inforced around the top of the exhaust ports.

To identify the later head they cast a number two onto the very front of the head & another number 2 just ahead of the forward inlet port.

On early heads James you need to watch for binding springs, as I found to my detriment some of them have a machining fault on the spring pedestals. Machine 3mm to high.
See the backend of my resto thread.

You can see one of the "2s" here on Mahesh's head.

You can see the heavier casting above the exhaust ports on Mart's head above
Hope this helps

I have never seen an early head but believe the counterbores for the springs were shallower and can cause the valve springs to become coil bound.
track action maniac.
