Thank for the replies.
I have a dial gauge on order, and have access to some fairly accurate measuring equipment via work. So I intend measure the float, take out the old washers, and measure the thickness with a micrometer.
Then order the sizes I need, at the moment I am thinking of going for the American custom washers, bit more expensive, but I think it is worth it for peace of mind.

Re: 1500 crank end float
Dial gauge arrived, and had ago at measuring, got a reaing of 0.4mm, which is equal to 15 thou, less than I was expecting.
However the problem with doing this in a Dolly is the radiator does get in the way. I think I might have to remove the radiator before I am confident about that measurement.

15 thou is not massive in terms of dropping washers out but I'd imagine that 4 thou would be the nominal number to look for. Big clearance on thrusts is a huge (relatively) gap for oil to leak out of and oil pressure will drop accordingly, so getting it back to 4 thou is a good move in terms of feeding oil where it needs it most.
