Limited slip differential half shafts.

#1 Post by tom16v »

Hi all

I snapped up an axle with the original Quaiffe pow-r-lok LSD fitted a few years ago now. As you can imagine, it wasn't cheap. I can't find the axle number on the case. I think it has likely been ground off as the internals have been transplanted into an alternative, though very good case. It is painted red though as would be expected.

The question I have is with regard to the half shafts.
They are the same diameter along their length which would suggest to me that they are the correct LSD specific uprated versions. However, they have a strange ground area a couple of inches from the splines.

My question is whether this is normal for the uprated shafts and done to clear a tight area in the diff or case, or do I have a pair of cut and shut half shafts?
I was told that this axle was used in rallying in its past, so anything is possible. :D

I will now try to attach some photos.

Tom, I've had a look in the parts catalogue and those half shafts look like they're the correct ones for the LSD (part number TKC3664). I can't help you with the dimensions but the profile is different to a normal half shaft. I would speculate that the ground area is where the bearings for the outside of the diff are situated. It is also possible that there's been some wear which has been built up with weld and ground flush. As you've said, anything is possible considering the history of the axle.

The relevant pages from the post-76 parts catalogue should help illustrate the differences between the normal axle and the LSD one.

Hope this helps any.

Hi Tom, The works rally cars had a bearing fitted to the diff end of each halfshaft tube to stop the whip in the shaft which caused the shaft to break on the early cars. I think this is possibly the spot where the roller bearing had been made to fit ,a collar was fitted either side of a roller bearing and welded or tapped bolts held the collars with o rings between the bearing .
Hope this helps ,see you soon Barry

Can anyone post me a pic of what an original painted LSD looks like?

I have one that is stamped up correctly and has the remnants of a red band around the axle tube (think LH side without looking?) and a red stripe on the rear cover.

would like to know how it should end up before I clean and re-paint!
