Dolomite windscreen wanted

#1 Post by geoffjimbo »

Hi Members

I have hit a major roadblock with my Dolomite project which is that I am unable to procure a front windscreen for my project anywhere in Australia.
The supplier suggested that if I could supply a template out of steel that they could use as mould they could possibly reproduce 10 new screens made in there factory in China
I have contacted all suppliers in Australia with no luck.
One solution that I have come up with was to hopefully find a windscreen the same shape and cut it to the same size as the Dolomite, has anybody tried this and what car screen did they use [it would have to be a laminated screen and the DOT logo would have to be retained for Rego].
I have to been able to obtain from the supplier a replacement windscreen for a Valiant S Series and Triumph TR6 of the shelf from the same supplier and never dreamed that I could not get a screen for a Dolomite.

You can still buy them new from Rimmer Bros, is is the cost that is putting you off or will they not ship something so fragile to Australia?
Current fleet: '75 Sprint, '73 1850, Daihatsu Fourtrak, Honda CG125, Yamaha Fazer 600, Shetland 570 (yes it's a boat!)

Past fleet: Triumph 2000, Lancia Beta Coupe, BL Mini Clubman, Austin Metro, Vauxhall Cavalier MK1 & MK2, Renault 18 D, Rover 216 GSI, Honda Accord (most expensive car purchase, hated, made out of magnetic metal as only car I've ever been crashed into...4 times), BMW 318, Golf GTi MK3 16v x 3

Oh dear!

I had a windscreen shipped out of Australia to here in New Zealand just a few weeks back. I cannot believe that it was the last one! And I have just chipped it as well so was expecting to order another.

Hi Misterp

Unfortunately I am in Canberra, but if the windscreen is in good condition and the price is ok it would be worth having as the alternative is not good, pay Rimmers price with no guarantee of a safe arrival or just send the car to the metal recyclers and have one less Dolomite on the road

It is possible to buy them in the UK from Pilkington. Whether they'd ship I have no idea. I know at work we recently ordered a screen at it came from China for a Morgan. First was damaged, second was fine.

Hi Geoff,

Sorry, spoke too soon. Ive just been out to check the spare I had, and it has a crack on it. So not alot of good.

Perhaps do the ring around in ACT, perhaps contact the Triumph club/TSOA and get an e-mail out there as others may also want a windscreen and/or spares.
Generally, you get far better postage rates per unit if you can get a few people around your area to chip in.

Sorry, and hope it works out OK.

As Pilkington was bought by Nippon Sheet Glass in 2006, it would not surprise me if screens were made in the far east (or near west if in Australia, or is it the even further east?!) so I would say it's worth giving them a go, perhaps email classics@pilkington.com and ask them?

Got a mate over from Australia on holiday, so I checked with him to see if he had any room in his bags, apparently not...

There has not been any need for the club to stock screens as British supply seems to be OK. I'm taking a good 2nd hand clear laminated to the TSSC international at Santa Pod in July for a member - for £10. I know the Rimmer Bros tinted laminated screen is pricey - but i'm equally certain they can be got cheaper, must ring my glass guy and find out!

Good to know, mine has a chip in it, may get it repaired or replaced.
