I have a Portuguese bank account and get charged every month for the privilege of having said account. It's nothing special, merely a basic account to pay bills in Portugal. We're very lucky in the UK to have generally free banking. Businesses normally are charged for cheques, paying in cash etc but not for just keeping money in an account.

I bank with Natwest in the UK and I have to say that since they were bought up by the tax payer they have become hopelessly uncompetitive vs banks like Santander. That said I have a very good relationship with them and do treat as well as customers so I really cannot be bothered to move.

Both my UK bank accounts (with Natwest, like Mark they treat me fairly well, so I can't be arsed to swap) are overdrawn, so I get charged anyway! But when I did have some money, I bought a static caravan rather than leave it in the bank. It doesn't make a huge profit from letting it out, but my £15K investment netts a steady grand or so a year, which is considerably more than I would have got from the bank on that amount of capital, and I get 4 or 5 weeks cheap holidays a year too.

Banks have to try new stuff since the PPi scam was made public. They will still make the billions while we pay more.

That will be when he flogged a load of our reserve to pay for the cost of Tony Blair's unfortunate choice in friends (Bush junior)
