1850 Engine mount restrictor plate orientation ?

For everything to do with Dolomites, Toledos, FWD cars and Dolomite-based kitcars.

1850 Engine mount restrictor plate orientation ?

#1 Post by MIG Wielder »

I've just been reading the various manuals on the 1850 engine mounts and I see that the 1850 is different to the Sprint in that there is a right angle plate " 158586 Restrictor ". The book shows this fitted on the lower side of the mount presumably to stop the engine hitting the underside of the bonnet during "yumping" . I looked at mine and its fitted at the back, I suppose to stop the engine fan hitting the radiator under heavy braking. Strangely the Haynes version shows if fitted to the front , which will stop the engine travelling backwards under acceleration.
Which is correct please ? Or doesn't it matter ? Is my interpretation of what its for wrong ?
Thanks
Tony.

The Leyland workshop manual refers to this as a 'stiffener plate'. In the workshop manual is an ambiguous picture, in that it's not clear which side of the car it represents so it could be interpreted as either facing backwards or forwards. The Leyland parts book clearly shows both stiffener plates facing downwards, in all 3 gearbox variants (manual with and without o/d and auto). Have just checked on my 1850 auto and both plates face towards the rear of the car.
I'm not aware of ever yumping in a Dolomite so perhaps it really doesn't matter how it's fitted :)

Thanks Mark, Thats good. On the basis of 3 1850's I reckon we can safely say that the restrictor plate is fitted with the right angle bit towards the rear of the car. I'll add a hand-written note to my parts book.
Cheers for now.
Tony.
