From discussions on the MG site I also frequent, I think a lot of cars are missed. Just as an example, my 1850HL won't be included as it is neither taxed or SORNed, having been off the road for many years. But it will be on the road late this year or next, if I'm spared to finish the work!

These figures also do not include Automatic Sprints which are listed separately. This will add another 50ish cars to the mix (in both taxed and sorned condition) Also, don't forget this is only Sprints, none of the lesser models are included here and in production terms (though not necessarily survival terms) the Sprint had the lowest numbers of any model in the Dolomite range.
On seasonal variations between numbers taxed and Sorned, as more and more Sprints become eligible for historic tax, these figures will plateau out since historic tax is only awarded on an annual basis. By April 2021 all Sprints will be tax free so cars on the road will all be taxed year round and only those in hibernation, dying, or undergoing long term work will be on Sorn. And the seasonal variations will be history.
There are undoubtedly quite a few "undiscovered barn finds" still out there, that are not on DVLA's books (computer). But as soon as one is unearthed and sold, it MUST now be Sorned and that puts it on the record for ever. Judging by the number that have emerged in the last couple of years, there can't be ALL that many left undiscovered that are still viable.
To Bumpa, have you not registered the 1850 in your name yet? When you buy a car, even if it not currently taxed or sorned due to many years off the road, you are legally obliged to register it in your name and IMMEDIATELY tax it or declare it SORN. When I bought my Sprint auto (untaxed since 1995) it did not have a V5 with it and I had to apply for one. I also had to declare it SORN at the same time. Someone on the FB page has just had a £380 fine imposed by DVLA for failing to declare SORN in just these circumstances. Though I suspect he will not pay it (there are plenty of loopholes to exploit) it was still a nasty shock!

Oh yes, see my edit above. But your fleet is safe from this since none of them have changed hands in that period. If you sell one it will have to be sorned, but that's not YOUR problem. Yes, I transferred the ownership of TPC 799S to me last November. Now you have jogged my memory, I remember that DVLA sent me a notice telling me to tax it or Sorn it, and I did it by phone. However, looking on their web site today it was still down as Untaxed, so I have just reapplied for Sorn on line and now have a reference number and a print out for the transaction.

There is another app called how rare is my car which is a little more readable, but the figures are the same, my 76 1500hl manual shows 8 on the road.

Just to clarify the dos and don'ts of Sorn, If you OWN a car and it has been in your ownership and off the road since 1998 or before, you do NOT need to SORN it.
If you BUY a car and it has been off the road, whether for 5 minutes or 50 years, you MUST SORN it immediately!
