Great pics Ian! Well done for taking and posting!

Hope you don't mind, I have pinched one of your pics and used it at the bottom of this thread on the SOC.

Well done Ian some great pics there.
It looks like a great turn out of cars, just proving how reliable these cars can be when looked after.

Sounds like a much higher than average drop out rate this year. :-(

We were going great, hitting the check points right on time, we made it into Knockhill 15 minutes before the point closed (in theory, I don't think any were closing strictly on the hour). We made up a further 10 minutes between there and Skiach (North of Inverness)
But at Knockhill it was clear that one of the crew was unwell, by Skiach it was not looking good. So we took a 30 minute rest stop, grabbed some sleep. After that we took the decision not to risk somebody's health and turned for home at around 7am. We arrived home at about 2pm Saturday. A couple of miles from home Binny developed a misfire but we made it.
The drone from the drivetrain is pretty loud at anything above 65mph - so that needs investigating.
Obviously the misfire needs looking at.
Sad not to have made it all the way, but it's not worth the risk.

Fab photos Ian, well done.

The car with the biggest spotlights? Guilty as charged. They were fantastic going across Otterburn and would have been great in the Welsh Marches if we had managed to get that far.

After a nightmare week (a sorry tale of three head gaskets) we were grateful simply to make it to the start. First action at that point being to check the head torque again ;-)

Then the speedo drive failed after about 30 miles into the event...

Then we ran out of brake pads (my last visual check had been slightly too cursory, clearly)

Then the engine decided that four cylinders was a luxury and the no.3 big end went on strike. So we spent 90 minutes at the roadside in freezing Cumbria waiting for the rescue truck, and three relays later arrived at the workshop again at 0530 on Sunday morning.

We managed about 1000 miles in total, including a fantastic rag across northern Scotland, with a chasing Spitfire unable to catch us :-) I never had to rev the engine hard - just "carried speed" everywhere :-) The driver of the Spit couldn't understand why his more powerful, lighter, lower, better-balanced car couldn't keep up with a standard Toledo with a very tired engine...

So I'm now in a quandary. Plan was to sell the car after the RBRR, but now it's in pieces. What to do? Sell as a rolling shell, get a S/H engine and put it back together, sell as a going car? It - sadly - has to go. Too many projects, not enough room...

Sorry to hear about Sam and Ian not making it :( My pal also did mot make it in his Stag due to a carb fault, but he managed to limp it home, while his co-driver caught a train home at Carlisle as he lives in Stevenage.
Like you say Sam, it looks like fair few did not make it. Top marks for entering though.

Tony.

Sad indeed that despite the best efforts of the crews, some cars didn’t finish the run. However, let’s be extremely grateful that thankfully there were no Darwin Award nominees as consequence of the RBRR.

Better news, Mahesh and I, along with a neighbour of mine, completed the RBRR in Mahesh's Sprint (NRW 581W) arriving back at 9.01pm

This late return was not a result of any problems on our part, but a mistake in the road book gave us (all) only 90 mins to do the 2.5hr section from Dartmoor to Blandford Forum, then this was compounded by a totally unrealistic 25 minutes to do the 64 miles from Brackley to the finish!

Apart from losing all headlights 10 miles shy of John o'Groats from a dead dipswitch which I was able to bypass at Skiatch and continue with dip beam and flash only, and a slight brake fluid leak from a pipe/hose joint corrected at Blandford (thanks to Clive for the fluid) the run was without incident and the car performed superbly.

When we clocked in at 9.01, the word was that there were, of 132 starters, 24 DNFs and 23 cars were still out there somewhere! I'm not TOO surprised at the high number of DNFs, some of the participants were setting a cracking pace! We were early or on time at most of the control points, without rushing unduly and still found at least 30 cars had got there before us at most of them!

Sorry we missed you at JoG Ian, though you obviously saw us!

Great result for you guys! I'm chuffed to bits for you guys! Sorry I was a bit distracted to the start, we turned up a bit late and I was flustered and trying to sticker up etc. before the off.
Regards,
Sam

Glad you got sorted!
re timings, the roadbook gave 2hrs22min and 1hr28 repectively? That is from earliest check-in to earliest check-in. We struggled with those though, partly because the ice-cream queue at Badgers Holt, and the faffy route at the end (plus satnag trying to send us via gated-off tracks into Knebworth!) with us finally getting signed off there at 20-14. And most if the delays were down to all the Sunday drivers who seem to deliberately get in our way! plus the idiot we nearly ran over who was roaming about in the road wearring darl clothing. Darwinian....

Things I learn't.
1. Check OD solenoid earth lead, they are getting old and crispy.
2. Don't fiddle with mixture/timing the day before a long run when the car is actually running really well.
(that doesn't include mentioning issues caused by eating service area food etc for a couple of days)
