Hi All.

Here is my 1980 1850. I bought it in March of this year after seeing it on a car transporter near my house. A day later after some haggling (And probably saving it from the scrap yard) the car was on my drive. The car wouldn't start when I bought it but the plugs were fouled, the vacuum hoses and 1 of the carb mounts were perished, the oil was like chocolate milkshake so I suspected a blown head gasket. I replaced the vacuum hoses and carb mount, cleaned the plugs ,changed the oil and after connecting jump leads from my Spitfire it started up, tick over was ok but just misfired and cut out when revved. It was pressurising in the expansion tank which was full of rusty water. A few evenings after work, a Saturday morning and a lot of soaking in diesel and the head was off with considerable ease. As I suspected the gasket ring had failed on cylinder 1. Going by the good condition of the studs I'd guess the job had been recently done but not properly, either not flushed through properly, torqued down or possibly both. The head replacement has come to a halt for now while I concentrate on the welding. Front valance has been repaired but badly, luckily I was able to salvage the repair panels that were badly welded on, both wings have localized areas of rust which I have cut out to replace with fresh steel, passenger door is pretty much shot so it's looking like I'll be replacing it with a decent spare that I have. Worse area so far is the rear headlight retainers that sit above the plastic splash guard, they have all but dissolved so sorting those out will be a job and a half. Wish me luck!

Welcome to the club Sid and thanks for posting some good pictures. I look forward to following this thread and you are cracking on at a pace.

It will be very useful having a second 1850 to compare with - especially with bodywork etc. I have found this recently while repairing sections in the boot of my Sprint.

All the best with the project. Keep us all updated!

Regards

MC
