 Post subject: Lucas DLB105 sports coil

Hi All, decided to change coil to Lucas gold sports
coil and run sererate fused 12v supply. (do away with the ballast coil)
Ordered new coil and waited for it to be delievered.
When it turned up, NO lucas box, No Lucas sticker on coil bracket, Bracket bent and not one
marking on the coil to say what is was, make or voltage. yes it was gold though.
So I've told ebay that advert is false with Lucas pictures and demanded a refund.
So my message is be very careful what you buy.
Sadly I purchased some Clutch master cyl rubbers from a well know supplier, only to feel i was had over
with the post. Sorry £4.50 post for 4 odd seals is a p--- take.

Wasn't there a decal in the box? Normally there is a Lucas decal on it and it's packed in a green lucas box but these are the same Chinese coils as Lucas supplies the last 10-15 years. You have the correct part but without the decal.

As with all the Lucas parts in the green boxes, also the "normal" coils, caps rotors, switches etc. whatever parts these are not Lucas and have a non quality aldough supplied by most classic car parts suppliers and sold as Lucas.

So don't worry, you have the right inferior part received.

I believe the Lucas brand trademark is now owned by a company that licenses it out to holders to sell their own stuff under. Hence why the quality isn't quite the same as it used to be. Basically new Lucas branded parts aren't really Lucas.

The best all round coil you can easily get now, I've been told as the Bosch blue coils. You can pick these up from Euro Car Parts and similar outlets if you want a chance of getting a genuine one.

Classic car world is full of duff and fake parts. I only buy from this site, a few trusted suppliers and off ebay if I can verify the band and the photos description is comprehensive.

One thing I will say for PayPal and ebay, buyer protection is excellent. If the seller is difficult, you give the matter to eBay and force a refund.

I hope you did understand that these coils are the ones not to have? These Chinese Lucas ones are the same as the Remax ones and the intermotor ones and as the other Jeroen branded coil and the ones where no effort was made to put a decal of choice on. My point was to show these are all the same sh1t. Genuine Lucas coils, whatever type, normal or sports have embossed LUCAS on the plastic top part. All plain ones are not LUCAS.

The official Remax documentation is also very funny. A coil out of the far east just not blanking completely off a Lucas decal showing as inferior and not taking the time of peeling of another far east manufacturers decal but totally blanking that off with your own logo.

I don't but call it "I have experienced and seen enough the last 20 years". I can only see these are the same coils from the same manufacturer what are currently sold under different brands. There are many types of "brandless" gold coils sold as Lucas sports coils and it depends when these were sold. Every few years these differ a bit and there are around 4 different casings and finishings at the moment and that tells me enough. Cheap production to make money of the classic car market demand. The Bosch casing and finish is already 50 years the same. Made in the far west now but in a proper Bosch factory. Looking at the Remax pics there are different casings also for the same products.

When a recommended supplier doesn't put their names on their products it isn't their product or a manufacturer.

The name Remax is used again i think because everybody whines the last few years about the green Lucas boxes are te ones not to have and voilá, a "new" brand is there to have. But why don't have your your own coil on your own documents but photoshopped labels over another decal? Why do you need to compare with others to show you are the best? Where are the company details below the forms? What is Remax?????? I think it's a box folding and decal sticking company. The contact points and condensers in their Remax boxes are exactly the same as the ones in Lucas boxes, Intermotor boxes or whatever now is for sale. Even their distributor rotors are the ones with the big rivet in the already cracked plastic.... The next few years they can make money as "the alternative to have" and when that falls apart, a new decal is designed. This is how it works.

My daily job the last 17 years minus 2 was to solve mechanical, electrical and running problems at classics and the last 5 years mainly electrical and running problems. Repairing cars that have already seen 6 workshops or being brought by workshops trying to solve.

A lot of problems nowaday's are caused by the new classic car parts. Three weeks ago I had an MGB and the owner had a new ignition switch for it in a Lucas box. Showing his new comparing with his old he was convinced to use the old. These new "genuine" Lucas switches don't "click" anymore. The rivets on the back for the contacts are just a pop rivet type wobbly thin thing and not a solid brass pin pressed. No Lucas on it and the same as all the others sold as 'Lucas type". Allmost all new parts are made and sold this way, not only for the British classics.
I only use NOS parts and if not available I find an alternative that does the job. No "far east" reproduction parts are fitted and if the customer insists he has to go find someone else who does but I don't. My main goal is to use the best available the last 20 years. I depend on classic cars all my life as daily transport and have tried and seen all. My customers do want also and if they ask cheap reproduction they can leave. I tested a lot, also coils on a ignition tester to find out a proper Lucas coil is a good coil, a Bosch the best under load and the nameless coils with whatever decal on cannot be named coils... I had 10 "classic oils" tested years ago in a lab to determine what was the best and also had the correct amount of ZDDP because at the company I worked for at that time used more than 5000liters a year for classics and needed the best. That is how I work and advice. Not believing but seeing or experiencing.

The only thing you can do is reley on my experience and my inbuild low quality detector or don't do anything with it and go your own way. I try to advice here and on Facebook and you can do with it as you like and I can only say that my experience is not build on working on my Dolomite and the neighbours Escort but on a period of 10 years seeing 300 classics a year of any make and any era and trying to solve any kind of problems on these and now for around 5 years mostly having the "problems people can't solve" in the workshop to work on what still makes me learn and see new things every day.

Why do people keep switching to the non-ballasted system when the original ballasted system is much better, especially for cold starting? If you don't understand the system, watch these four videos. They are short (no ads) and well explained...

In this ballasted circuit they use a ballast resistor but in Sprints (and other models) the resistor is just a length of standard wire which I believe is 5 feet long. This length of wire has 1.5 Ohms of resistance, I know, I've measured it.

You will still have a similar problem of which coil to get though. :lol:

Hi All,
Once again thanks for your advice.
Its great having people in the club with a wealth of information.
So I read Jeroen message with great interest.
I am a ex works technician that used to work on loads of cars,
but got out the motor trade many moons ago
I'm afraid the last Ten years or so I've moved into Classic motorcycle's
which I rebuild and this take up my time.
Yes I still love the sprint but have Ignored her to my peril.
So I'm trying to fix that at the moment. Once running I intend the get the new vinyl
roof fitted and put her back on the road.
Anyway I can say restoring most 40 year Honda motorcycles can be challenging but
you can get most parts. Obviously not all but a hell off a lot.
So this brings me back to the coil.
Yes Ive got another Lucas gold sports coil and it does have the word Lucas cast into the nose of the coil.
But as classic enthusiasts I think we should demand more.
I got a throttle cable from one main triumph supplier and it did not clip into the bulk head hole.
When I queried this they said has the hole been drilled out, No it was a new bodyshell in 83 and I built the car so NO.
So yes Jeroen is 100% right the best parts to fit are NOS parts but how long can they last.
We need better part for sure, Oh yes I could fit a ballast coil again but thought I try straight 12v.
Jury is out on this at moment LOL. Cheers
