Sprint clutch advice please

#1 Post by Sundowner »

Hi Folks,
I got back into my Sprint yesterday and found that the clutch has.....well there isn't one. It was working fine when I last used it, about 3 months ago.
Due to the fire crisis we've been going through for the past couple of months I haven't been in the car at all and this came as a bit of a shock. But considering the time between now and when I was last in it, not surprising.
So, in your opinion, knowing Dollys like you do, what's the most likely cause?
I reckon its most likely the slave unit that has decided to give up the ghost, or is the master cylinder the usual cause?
After a very quick look at some of the vendors prices, its not cost prohibitive either way. Maybe I should put a kit through them both or even replace them both.
Knowing full well that some of the bits sold by some of the vendors leave a lot to be desired, quality wise, is there anything to look out for when ordering?
I prefer Robsport...good guys who have never ever let me down, but compared to a couple of other vendors, their prices can be a bit up there.
I look forward to any and all advice.
Thanks & Cheers,
Rob

Hello again,
There's no need to answer, unless you feel you want to, because I called on a really good mechanic mate who came over and had a look at it.
It turns out that it has the wrong slave unit in it. This doesn't surprise me because, when I first bought the car, it was obvious that the clutch needed replacing. I bought the correct parts and when we got into it we found that it had a Herald (or something small like that) clutch installed. I expect that this slave unit was installed at the same time as that incorrect clutch plate went into it.
So, I'll order a new slave cylinder unit and a master cylinder overhaul kit.
Cheers,
Rob

I can’t picture how you’d successfully fit a herald style slave to a Sprint gearbox...the Sprint slave should be mounted in a bracket suspended from the gearbox top cover bolts and acts on a cross shaft/operating arm, whereas isn’t the herald style reliant on being clamped and acting on a lever that directly operates the release bearing?

I have no idea what it is really, its just not a SPRINT unit. Neither was the clutch that I removed several years ago. I just used the "Herald" tag as a suggestion of something smaller and wrong. Sorry about that. The slave unit is bolted to the correct bracket but has a system of spacer nuts on longer bolts to mount it and it has a much shorter pushrod. I understand the Sprint pushrod is 9cm in length from the centre of the clevis hole to its end. This one is about 5cm.
