I suspect the problem with all these repairs, is you are not killing the crack. The end of the crack is a stress riser, in a brittle material that means that once a crack starts, it rapidly propagates through the material.

You need to drill a hole at the end of the crack to stop it, then repair it.

The first I knew of the problem was when it fell in two pieces.

Jeroen, I can't find anything on Google on these parts from the Italians. Do you have a link or anything?

Just to update everyone. The one I repaired is still in one piece and the car is in almost daily use.

There isn't a crack any more though, it's in two halves.

Yup, that were my situation.
I think the araldite might have worked longer term if I'd clamped it together without the stalk in the broken mount. But I was afraid it would brake again when I put the stalk back in.

Jeroen, Is there nothing more on the Italian source - for when the Corola is over?

I have a broken mounting here and think I will try using Devcon to repair it.
Any reason not to try this adhesive?

thanks,
Ian

Yes. The communication is a bit slow but I got a confirmation there are a few available.

Funny the way these posts re-materialise every once in a while! So our repair continues to function. This is a cheap home fix option that worked for us.
By now 3-D printing the base plate is probably not beyond the realms of possibility and budget and this is indeed what the Italian Club may have undertaken successfully. It will be interesting to hear back from them. In the meantime does anyone here have access to a 3-D printer that would be willing to prototype this item?

About 7 or 8 years ago after failing to repair my mirror mount with Araldite, I modelled a 'new' one around the ball on the mirror stalk from a product called Selleys Knead It Steel. http://www.selleys.co.nz/trade/speciali ... d-it-steel

While not perfect, it is black and in its shaded location looks no different to the original. No vibration or any other issues for example with adjusting the mirror itself.

Would it snap off in the case of an accident? I expect so but haven't tested that. But then it is a car with an ANCAP rating of one or below so I have to drive to avoid others accidents!

Geoff

The Italian made is machined from a sort of plastic/nylon. Rigid enough to keep the mirror in place and flexible enough not to break.

There's no link or whatever and before something is possible again in Italy will take while.

Jeroen.
