Thanks for your replies everyone, i've ordered some from Jawel in Smethwick, who I used to deal with back in my painting days before I even had a computer, let alone internet access! They are sending me some in the post (which I thought was a bit naughty, but i'm not complaining!)

Since I don't have anything much to match TO, i've just ordered Vermillion on the correct CML colour code and will hope for the best! The guy who is hopefully going to paint the car already has colour in 2 pack which he bought as Vermillion and the car he bought it for turned out to be Flamenco! He was so sure it was Vermillion, he didn't check the code on the car, he paid and I benefit!

The paint has come, along with half a dozen 500ml aerosols of primer which they have on offer @ 3 for £10, rude not to! I've left it in the box for now till I actually need it. only got it cos you don't know what's up next with the mail and so forth.

Not done a lot this weekend as the weather has been dry the last few days, i've taken advantage to recover the shed roof which disintegrated last winter.

But I HAVE more or less got the exhaust system sorted with the down pipe built (the only bespoke-ish part of the system) the front silencer pipe shortened to suit and a hole drilled and the secondary lambda sensor installed along with it's cheat. The cheat is just an extension to get the lambda sensor further away from the exhaust gases and with a smaller hole in that lets less gas at the sensor, fooling the ECU into thinking there is a CAT there, when there isn't. Otherwise I'd have a constant management light on which would be frustrating! Or need to fit a CAT which is worse!

Image

Experience with the Carledo has shown that even without a CAT fitted, the Carledo, which has a CAT loom and ECU and 1 lambda sensor, will ALMOST pass a CAT MOT emission test, with CO and HC levels passing, only the Lambda reading is a tad too high to pass!

The centre and cross axle pipes are of the Rimmers Sports style, but in mild steel. I don't know who made them originally, I got them from Alun, used, but in sound order. The back box is another mystery from a different source, but it looks nice and fits the car. A Sprint NEEDS twin tailpipes!

Image

The miracle is that parts from 3 different sources have slotted together perfectly, as if made for the job! Once again, Karma has smiled on me, I worked harder making a Rimmers sports system fit the Carledo without banging the body in 10 places! Once i've fabbed up (or adapted) some mounts, I should be able to get it all tight on the car and fire it up again for more than the 20 seconds at a time that is all i've risked so far, not wanting to upset the neighbours. I'm also more than mildly interested in hearing what it sounds like, i'm hoping for a fairly restrained noise level, a cruiser doesn't need a rorty exhaust note, a soft deep burble will do nicely! Also, I've fitted a big bore exhaust on my auto Cavalier in the past and had to pull it off again smartish, it sounded awful pulling from low revs as autos do!

Stay safe and stay home!

Steve

Steve,

The back boxes with the twin pipes, like you have there, were available in the early 90's. A friend of mine re-shelled a Sprint into a 1500 FWD back then. He had no idea what he was doing but he did have lots of money, so he ended up with lots of expensive bits on it, including the stainless exhaust with the twin pipes. When he cooked the engine due to having an 1850 radiator fitted (I did tell him but he ignored me!), I broke the car for spares and fitted the exhaust to my Sprint. It sounded great, so hopefully yours will too. It might have been available through the DSR, as I have a feeling that's also where he got his vented disc kit from.

I have always wondered why no one makes the twin pipe silencer anymore, as it does look so much better.

The anwer to any question that starts "why don't they....." is always COST! It must have been too expensive to make, to sell for a resonable price compared with the single pipe box. Being more or less straight through you can see inside this one and it has the more expensive baffle design and, of course 2 sets. Since the current Rimmers single pipe Sports back box is over £100 on it's own these days, i'd imagine they'd have to want well over £200 for this one and not many customers would be prepared to pay that when a cheaper alternative was around.

Another possibility is someone realizing they can make and sell a cheaper single pipe box for the same price as the, more expensive to build, twin pipe model, thus increasing profit! If I sound cynical, it's because I am!

Whatever, i'm glad i've got this 90s throwback! It appears to be in excellent shape too!

On noise levels i'm cautiously optimistic, the Rimmers sports system, slightly modified for the shorter Carledo, produces a monitored (at Castle Coombe) 85db at 4500rpm (just over 100mph in real terms) In life, cruising on the motorway at around 3500 rpm, it's not TOO intrusive, even with no back seat or soundproofing and almost no carpet.

In the well soundproofed Sprint and with most of the exhaust (except this back box) in mild steel which is less "boomy" than stainless, it should be quiet enough to hear the stereo at cruising speeds!

If worst comes to worst, i'll have a custom centre box MADE for it that ISN'T straight through, to shut it up a bit more! The engine produces somewhere between 141 and 147 bhp out of the box (depending on source quoted) and was enough to give the almost 2 ton, air conditioned, power steered Omega it came from a good level of performance. I've not altered the map at all (and I don't intend to) but i've fitted a less restrictive air filter and this less restrictive exhaust which might be good for a handful of horses, the ECU can cope with up to 5% power increase, add this to no aircon or PAS to suck power, a taller diff and a kerb weight just over ONE ton and it SHOULD go very well indeed! I can probably afford to sacrifice a couple of horsepower on a quieter exhaust!

Steve

You are quite correct Glenn, they twin tailpipe back boxes were produced by Falcon for and sale by the DSR.
They did have a "lifetime" guarantee but that's another story.

What I can say about them is that they do precisely nothing. Remove the back box and the exhaust sounds exactly as before.
How do I know this, I tried doing exactly that....
As a solution I first tried a T2000 Chris Witor exhaust which was okay but then put on a standard Sprint twin tail pipe,
following a recommendation from a Dutch TDC member (I think it was either Hans or Jeroen, apologies for not remembering)
this being the best of what I tried.

Steve,

Yes, I quite agree that it is definitely down to cost that they don't make a twin pipe one as standard but I would happily pay double the cost for a twin pipe one. Like you, I think that a Sprint should have twin pipes. You'll have to post a video of how it sounds when you get the engine running.

Ian,

I thought I had remembered that correctly but it was 30 years ago! I also thought that it was a Falcon one. I did look Falcon up yesterday, to see if they still do a Sprint system, but they seem to be part of Miltek now.

If it had very little silencing effect, that that certainly explains why it sounded a lot better than the single pipe S/S box that I replaced it with. The single pipe box was nice but a bit tinny and it resonated a quite a lot, the twin pipe one had a much deeper sound to it.

 It had no silencing effect, none at all!

Chris Witor sells single box systems for the T2000 range.
These are made for him by Phoenix Exhausts in South Devon. They do make bespoke......

Hi Ian, it's me who has this exhaust set-up on my Sprint: Rimmers Sports middle silencer and stock twin exhaust pipes (no silencer). After some 10+ years of use, it's still in good shape although the sound deadening in the (middle) silencer is probably gone now...

The original tread of this exhaust set-up was here.

Dave, I don't THINK i'm going to need to cut it short, I hope not as i'll lose the nice rolled ends if I do. Hard to tell at the moment as there is no bumper fitted, but if it sticks out an inch or two, I wont worry as the towbar will still stick out further!

Measurements as follows, stub inlet pipe 65mm, silencer 455mm, tailpipes 315mm. Since the silencer overhangs the pipes by 10mm at each end, the overall length is 825mm.

I've decided to make my own support bracket for it, Rather than use the somewhat crude Rimmers designed offering, with 2 rubber cotton reels supporting a crossbar around 4-5 inches long that will be bolted direct to the silencer in the middle of the bar. The thinking is that there is quite a lot of strain on a single mount, sharing the load will help and if one of 2 mounts fail, it will still be partly supported so less of a disaster than if a single mount breaks. I haven't quite worked out how to mount the cottonreels to the boot floor yet but will probably have to take the tank out again to do it, CURSES! However, I want something where I can later change the mounts WITHOUT removing the tank so some sort of captive nut arrangement is indicated. I'm thinking something like a lump of 5mm bar, drilled and tapped to take the reels and then welded (a handful of firm tacks should do) to the inside of the boot floor with holes drilled underneath it to match.

No work so far this weekend, still fixing the shed roof ATM though I did spend one of my tea breaks pulling out the rear window! The aperture is perfect! No work needed but clean off the mastic, flat and paint.

I did very similar to that. There is a bit of clearance between the floor and the tank - but do a dummy fit to make sure they don't touch. There is a large bung in the floor there you can stick something in to feel around where the threaded bit comes through.
