1975 1500TC - Bootlid, fitting chrome strip?

Hi

I have had my Rimmers bootlid painted and am about to fit badges and chrome strip. Any idea the best way to fit it, with the metal clips (627362) and if so, how many as my manual says 15, but seems excessive. I was thinking of sticking it on with Tiger seal, any thought?

I normally use the clips, out of laziness more than anything else. 6 or 7 is plenty. As a gesture to rust prevention I like to use new ones.

But with everyone else thinking harder and more about futureproofing, it might be time to get my finger out and think of a better way, Tigerseal could well be it! Especially for a daily driver.

When I fitted the new bootlid to the Carledo, it came without badge holes. So I de-pinned the badges and stuck them on with double sided badge tape. They are still there 8 years later.

I stuck a boot lid chrome trim on a Stag with silicon, it stuck well but was absolute nightmare to get of again,you want something thats not as sticky as silicon

When you push the trim onto the lip on the boot the clips scratch the paint causing rust to appear from behind the trim. So what i do is to cover the lip & fill the inside of the trim with grease then fit the trim, If the clips remove the paint when fitting at least its covered with grease ?

I though of that! Then I thought, how often am I gonna need to remove a stainless trim from a new or newly painted boot lid? With no clips to rust it, could be longer than I will live!

When Triumph first fitted these stainless moldings to the 2000 & 1300 in the sixties, the strip was first filled with windscreen sealant prior to fitting. This prevented the strip holding water and rusting the clips. This is the same sealant used to seal the front and rear screens. Naturally it is a little messy as a process and requires care and time cleaning up any excess. BL cost cutting stopped the practice and caused all the problems around the edge of the roof and boot so commonly experienced since.

Having started with a 1300TC, I have always used windscreen sealant when fitting these moldings. I have had my Dolomite since 1973 and last refitted the moldings after a respray in 1999. Still no rust. Unlike silicone or Tiger Seal they can be removed without damage. Excess sealant is easily wiped off with rag/paper wipes and white spirit.

The 15 clips, are for both the boot lid (7) and the molding that continues on the edge of the rear quarters (4 each side).

Hi All

Thanks for the reply's, I think I will fill it with windscreen sealant and some new clips. Got a good deal on the badge peg fittings, and some new clips at a lot less than £32 including P&P from Rimmers for 10 and 15 of each. Some shopping around got me all I need for £16 (Combination of James paddock for clips and eBay for the pegs).

I have fitted the boot lid, an I think it fits well for being a repo panel (the gaps are just as bad as the original!)
