As far as I know the 1850 engine had exactly the same specification throughout its production. Where are you getting the information about early and late heads being different? The 1850 head IS different to the 2 litre TR7 head.

The Stromberg 1850 heads had smaller diameter valves. TR7 heads are totally different, all of them.

The TR7 has the same bore size as a Sprint, it is kind of like an 8V Sprint. The 1850 block has a different size cylinder bore.

There are at least four cylinder heads that looks similar.
Left bank Triumph Stag
Early 1850 with smaller valves (Strombergs)
Later 1850 (SUs)
TR7

I bought a head from a stag owner as he thought that's what the head was, he was then told 1850, I was later advised that it wasn't an 1850 either but was a TR7. The V number on the side is important when looking for a replacement.

Cylinder heads for the 1850 and 1850HL are easy to distinguish visually.

1850 heads have a (water transfer) slot below the ports for cylinders 3 and 4,
said slot is not present on HL heads.

The castings themselves are other ways different, so much so that the water transfer housings not only
look different externally but are actually not interchangeable.
