Chassis number from number plate

#1 Post by RichardHyde »

Does anybody know how I can get the chassis number from a number plate ?

I think that the British Motor Museum can provide me with the paint code from the chassis number, but not the number plate ?

Thanks, Richard

This was a reply to a similar post in December 2021 from Alan XIVValve

BMIHT website has a facility, you pay £6 and they'll e-mail one piece of information about the car from the VIN. I confirmed two cars' colours using this method last year.

A friendly MoT tester should be able to provide you with this also

As a "friendly MoT Tester" I can do this - message me. But I'd want a good reason why..... If you are trying to resurrect an old chassis number onto a newer car then I'm not interested.

anyone with access to autotech or similar or a trade account for a parts supplier. I can get it but as Matt says why do you want it?

I’m not doing anything dodgy !! I’m trying to colour match my current green Dolomite with my first Sprint. Once I know the chassis number, I can get the colour code from BMIHT. I’ll then get it sprayed the same colour.

I’ve emailed BHIMT to see if they’ll send me the colour code if I just supply the number plate.

Thanks, Richard

This may have been asked before and apologies if it has but been looking through many posts and not found the answer.
On a Dolomite Sprint Is the VIN/chassis number stamped anywhere other than on the plate attached to the N/S inner wing?
I am the registered owner of CFV192S and the plate is missing, also the V5 is lost, in order to request a replacement V5 I need the VIN/Chassis number.
Will it be on the car in another location or will the engine number help?
Thanks in advance.

No. Cars made after 01 September 1979 have the VIN stamped into the boot gutter, but ones made before that date do not. However, in the same manner a friendly MoT tester can give you the VIN from the registration.

OK so the car was first registered August 1977, so will have to find a cooperative MOT guy with access to the DVLA data base.
Thank you for your advice.

Should be on the V5, assuming you have one, and also on the plate attached to the inner wing, or is that missing too?

Just request a replacement V5, if you are still at the address held by DVLA it should be straightforward?

Interesting, my 1500 SE was registered in March 1980 but there is no 'stamped' Vin in the boot gutters, just the Vin plate etc. in the engine bay, so your suggesting that the body shell at least on my car was made pre Sept 1979?
