Noisy Wiper Motor - any thoughts?

Hello All,

I hope you're well.

I have recently fitted my car with its newly refurbished wiper motor, and upon testing it we found it makes a very alarming noise!

It seems to work ok and aside from it being an absolute ****** to fit....everything seems ok.

Has anyone ever had a wiper motor which makes this noise before, or know why it might be doing it?

I already plan on refurbishing a spare so if this one fails i've got one to replace it with.

I looked at the pic on your resto thread and it looks like the rubber bushes that surround the 3 bolts which secure the motor to the support panel are either missing or wafer thin. This could be transmitting more motor noise than is desirable into the body.

Those are definitely fitted, although i admit you cant see them in that image.

What does everyone else's sound like?

I remarked to myself how quiet it was...then I spotted the 'mute' button!

I doubt ill hear it once the engine is running anyway......

Normally it just sounds like a faint, fairly high pitched and consistent whirring sound. you can hear it running, even above the sound of a normal-ish engine below 3000 rpm or so, but it's not obtrusively loud, your brain soon learns to ignore it.

It shouldn't have that grinding quality that yours has!

It shouldn't have that grinding quality that yours has!

it didnt do it when we tested it outside of the car, admittedly it also didn't have the linkage connected.

i cant bear taking it out again at the moment so i'll refurb another unit ready for if/when this one goes pop.

Are you SURE you want to do that? If you think it's tough to get in and out now, it's a lot tougher once the crash pad and steering column bracketry is in place!

You can test in situ with the linkage disconnected to eliminate those parts, it'll still work just the same.
