1850 clutch with Sprint o/d box.

Hi folks,

I have a pal who has a Dolly 1850 fitted with a Sprint o/d gearbox. Question is, will the box come out doing it from inside the car?

Does it have the adapter plate fitted? If it does, you can undo everything around the bell housing from inside the car, but the 'box has to come out from below and you'll need to drop the rear subframe mounts too.

I doubt having the adapter plate omitted would give sufficient extra room (and the gear lever would be in the wrong place anyway, so I expect it has been fitted with the 'box)

It's certainly less frustrating trying to align the splines on a Sprint 'box when the engine is also out of the car; it depends to some extent what facilities you have...with a ramp I'd leave the engine in, without a ramp I'd whip the pair out together.

Yes it can be done. Easier with the tunnel out but that can already be a pre preperation and can be fitted later again when there's only one day on a ramp available. But be prepared of things go wrong like manifold studs etc. You are aware a 1850 clutch doesnt fit then?

The tunnel and all other bits apart from drivers seat would be out already. No ramp, but run up ramps good jack and good stands and a flat dry area. He does know the clutch is a sprint one and not 1850 Jeroen So it looks like it will be done on the floor with engine left in, and fingers crossed I'm glad my Triumphs are automatic's Thanks both for your help, if there is anything else you think of, let me know.

Rather you than me dude, that box is HEAVY! I did one just once lying on my back on the garage floor, when I was in my 20s and relatively strong. I'll never do another like that!

I took my Sprint gearbox out and left the engine in place, make sure you remove the tunnel, i didn't and it was a pain getting it out

Gravity assists taking it out, but holding it up whilst you try to turn the flange to align the splines is indeed a young man’s challenge!

I'm just glad it's not me that will be touching it I am just providing the space and equipment thank god. I think it might be engine out.

Thats a very kind offer offer Steve, but i have both myself. Sadly i need a new body as mine has seen better days Hence why i can only oversee the job. I have also never done a Dolomite clutch in my life
