Fuel odour

#1 Post by 73Iceblue »

Hello every one

here my next question: my dolly smells very hard after fuel-specialy when driving. I check the fuel line, tank to carburators, via fuelpump. No leakings!!

Perhaps when driving some waves in the tank may overflow the tank-tap??

This circumstance may ask a big effort for smokers, if they wan't blow up with the car!!

Thanks in advance

happy xmas and new year health and peace

I'd be checking the tank breather pipe that goes from the top rear LH corner of the tank behind the cardboard trim and up to the filler neck. Because it's hidden, no one looks at it. And because of THAT, it's probably the 40 odd year old plain rubber tube which disintegrates when exposed to ethanol petrol!

I agree with Carledo about checking the breather pipe. My recommendation is check the tank end first as you may be able to solve the problem by just cutting off a bit of the rubber pipe and is it is that end that tends to rot.

Hi together

thanks for your answer. The pipe seems to be new..... even change the gasket etc from the tap.....it still smells.... I prefer the odour from starting engine DC-3

Have you looked carefully at the end where the breather pipe connects to the petrol tank as I have found it is at this point that the rubber pipe will most likely perish. All you may need to do is cut off a bit of the pipe and then reconnect. Is the smell of petrol there mainly when you fill up with petrol?

On thing I have come across with people and fuel lines, probably thru ignorance, one I came across at a car show a few weeks ago was somebody had used Silicon hoses for fuel line, and Silicon is not fuel proof, I think its actually porous, worth checking to see if your breather hose is either not e10 safe, as Ethanol will dissolve old style hoses or silicon hoses have been uses for your breather. There is also lot of Chinese "snide" etehenol safe fuel line which is not what it claims to be, try and buy fuel safe hoses from a reputable source.....
