It's a bit of working backwards. The next time adjusting the valves will repeat. The valvelift doesn't change but with the valves too deep now the actual opening is way less than it should be.

I believe the English word for this kind of work is called a bodge?

I have one each of 80-85 inclusive, 87 and 90, 4 x 86, 2 x 88 and 8 x 89

Some have a register where the valve tip has impacted them; I make sure when reusing those that the register faces upwards.

Now I’ve measured them all I just need to keep the cat out of reach of them!!

Thanks all. Head is off car on bench. I'd had same view about trying to get it perfect but you have to have a starting point.

I've also wondered whether everything would tighten down further when the head studs are tightened up. I think the cam follower are 14lbft and the head studs 55lbft. But it would have to be compressing the metal for that surely. Still, we are only talking about thous of inch

I checked one of the old cam followers vs the single new one. Pretty much identical. Measuring the depth of the follower from a rule across the top it was 22.25mm to the protrusion and 23.5mm to the main inner face. So the follower can sit into the valve collar by 1.25mm or approx 49 though before there is a problem.

When I last did this yeeeeears ago I did it with the head on the engine. It was 10 thou clearances but on recent removal there were a couple sub-10 thou. I don't have a need to live life on the edge with this. I think I will revisit the complete need x 16 based on 12 thou clearance and go from there.

Jeroen - I can see what you mean. It is what it is unfortunately. There's a very finite number of people in Perth with experience of the car. I took it to a cylinder head specialist and in hindsight should have got the valve guides done but not the seats re-cut. I could have eventually lapped those in myself with a lot less material removed I suspect. That said the valve lift remains the valve lift and we're talking a few thou so I don't expect a material difference really.
