Voltage Stabiliser Earth

Morning all

Both my Temp and fuel gauge look to read high quite quickly from starting. I have put in a new Voltage stabiliser still no change, the unit its self is secured to the painted bodywork. Would it be fair to say the earth is not in affect hence still no change in the gauges?

I don't really want to start scraping away fresh paint, if i run an earth wire from the unit to say the coil bracket bolt will this earth it?

You should be able to get a good earth via the screws that hold the voltage regulator to the bulkhead but if the new voltage regulator case has been passivated this may need to be scrapped away under the washer/screw heads.

It doesn't matter how you arrange an earth for the stabiliser, but if you have the original style of stabiliser the can must be earthed one way or another.

Yes. Paint is an excellent insulator. If you don't want to scrape paint off the attachment point, just install a separate black wire from the attachment screw to a good earth somewhere else.

Yeah i was thinking along the same lines, would the coil bracket bolt work?

Just take a length of wire & go straight to the negative terminal of the battery, temporarily. If the gauges are doing the same thing, it's not a bad earth. If you have a multimeter, check the input & output voltages. If your new VS is a solid state version, any old multimeter will do. If it's the original type, you will need a multimeter with true RMS.
