Smiling a lot.

I’d forgotten how much I love this car.
I had major chest surgery about 6 years ago and couldn’t steer it for a couple of years, and so in the garage it stayed.
Since then it’s been used sporadically, and had a couple of problems that basically came about from lack of use, and being too busy with work and other things to sort it properly.

This year I’ve thought sod it and took it to a local garage and had the niggles sorted, just got it back and it’s just brilliant.
It makes me smile, it’s a pleasure to go out in. Quick for a dolly, noisy, engaging, smelly, and has a stereo (with a cassette player and graphic equaliser) not an in car entertainment system.

I’m determined to use it over the summer much more than before, and get some confidence in it.
It coughs and splutters and is a bit rough when cold ( bit like me!) but once it has a warmed up runs smoothly and easily to the red line.
The engine was replaced about 10 years ago with a rebuilt one by jigsaw, has a DMS2 cam, bored to +20 with new pistons, a balanced bottom end and lightened flywheel, baffled sump and a matched inlet with 45s. It feels very strong and runs cool with a sprintparts?? (Australia) alloy rad. It’s probably only done 1000 miles, if that, in that time, but hopefully this summer I’ll add a lot more to that and most importantly make me smile every time I get in it.

I’ve been lucky that I’ve had some and still have cracking cars, but my sprint which has been with me now 16 years is the one that still gives me the most pleasure. I’ll never sell it.

Why? It’s basically the car I wanted when I was 20, but couldn’t afford it….

Brilliant!

Every time I go out in either the Dolomite or the Spitfire for the first time in a while I always find myself thinking "This is fun, I'd forgotten how much I enjoy this!"

First run out of the year this afternoon, not too far, but far enough to get some heat into all parts

Forgot how pokey it is, surprisingly easy to get a chirp from the rear tyres! But still great fun.

Will probably need the alternator replacing as under load, with the cooling fan on at idle was grumbling and squeaking, but that’s for another day.

It’ll get a quick wipe down, before returning to its slumbers, hopefully not for too long, but with the winter May return next week, it’ll not be out again until the salt on the roads has well and truly disappeared.

Any thoughts or advice on swapping the old Lucas alternator for a more modern alternative would be greatly appreciated!!

The Maestro/Montego alternator gives a much higher output and is a direct fit replacement; I’ll post the generic model code when I can recall it…

That would depend on whether you're fitting it to a slant engine or an OHV engine as I recall the hand is different on each...I can't recall which is which...or how the hands are defined

I also have vague recollection that the units can easily be handed by rotating the end plate through 120 degrees or so but I may be mistaken as it must be 10 years since I handled one

Here you go:

According to this my slant 4 1850 is Left and my OHV 1500 is Right.
I could be wrong though! :-)

Quick question

I bought and fitted (fortunately when having the new engine fitted, the guys put the alternator bolt in from the water pump side, which made removal a doddle!!) the uprated alternator that was suggested. Think it is rated at 65 ACR.

Started up, spot on, volt gauge at 1500 rpm between 14 and 15 V. Is this ok ? Is is possible to “over alternator” the car? Pushing too much current and charge through the system?

Thanks in advance!

About 14.2 volts when running is absolutely fine as it can still charge the battery whilst electrical devices and the spark draw loads, but yes, you can cook it with too much. 15 volts would be concerning.

Probably best to check the alternator output with a multimeter, rather than trust the accuracy of the voltmeter on the dashboard.
