3 rail gear selector rebush kit - red washer placement

#1 Post by Bunji »

Currently rebushing Betty's gear selector with the kit part number 519770 to eliminate gear stick slop and rattle.

I can place all of the parts in the kit except for 2 red washers which appear to be a fibre material. Looking at all other bits in the kit, I have narrowed it down to them being part number 146303A.

Looking at the parts manual it places them inside the 156910 top hat bushes, however the current set up has those bushes sitting directly in the hole on the bottom of the gear stick with sleeve 129119 running between them.

Any ideas?

Afraid not! But if it fits, works with minimal play etc, it should be fine.
However, don't change the plastic ball at the bottom of the gearstick. Or if you do, do not, under any circumstances, throw the old one away. New ones have a habit of self destructing.

I now have a 3 rail gearbox, and am considering making some of the bushes from brass or nylon. I hate a sloppy gearchange.

I have never used the red washers, my understanding is that there was an earlier version of the three rail gearbox that used them and they are not used on Toledo's / Dolomite's.

With reference to replacing the rubber bushes with nylon, I use the following to replace the bush midway down the operating shaft and to date I am very happy with it.

As an aside I have seen on Youtube people placing one of the 'O' ring on the gear lever against the plastic ball, this is incorrect, they both fit in the top extension where the shaft runs through to stop oil leaking out along the shaft where it enters and exits the housing (with the dirt and oil where the shafts run through they can be missed easily).

Finally ensure you put the bolt at the bottom of the gear stick round the right way or it will foul, also I always put the bolt midway down the shaft in from the top so if the nut comes off your not left stranded (I learnt this the hard way when the bolt fell out mid down shift resulting in no gears).
