Dolomite Sprint Water Pump Cage

#1 Post by steve54 »

Hi All

I have a 1980 dolomite Sprint which had coolant seeping from the side slot under the water pump and have bought a Rimmers pump repair kit. I have managed to remove the pump with the aid of a slide hammer which left the brass cage in the block which i cannot seem to get it to budge. Over the last 2 days have tried the usual mentioned options on the forum ie slide hammer and even made up a long bolt and metal brace but all to no avail.

There are a few comments on the forum of leaving the cage in the block, my concern is as i was getting coolant coming from the slot would this still happen if i left the cage in place as i would not be able to replace the 2 large o rings on the cage or does the leak come from the other seals which i am replacing on the shaft?

I hope you can understand what i am trying to ask, if you need more info please ask.

Thanks in advance for your comments or suggestions

Only done this job once on a TR7 but like you the cage was in well. I figured if it was that tight it probably wasn't my leak and left it alone and fitted the remainder of the new pump and had no further issues.

and the same for me.
The cause of leaks is usually the water pump seal itself, and you need to make sutre the impellor face is perfect where it runs.
In my case I have access to a friends lathe.
LD Spares suggest the best face is to leave slight annular machine marks/rings.
