In my mind it's not about the environment, it's to deprive us of personal transportation!

Indeed.

EVs, as they stand, are a throw away item. The batteries last what, 5 to 10 years? You're not going to replace the batteries as it wouldn't be economically viable. What's going to happen to the businesses that support ICE vehicles? Why has car insurance gone up...EV repairs? How much damage to the environment do these old EV batteries cause?

This has already happened

I work full time and also work as a sole trader.
The massive price hikes we have witnessed have meant my income is somewhat diminished in actual terms
and obviously much more in real terms.
It is not viable to run my car as things stand, even though there is no road tax to pay.

So what to do? I am trying to increase my sole trader income but have had to invest almost
£1000 on Public Liability insurance and equipment, so need to recoup that first.
Obviously I could apply to have my wage topped up by Universal Credit but I am not prepared
to do such a thing.

Well actually I do have personal transport, since I can walk or cycle .

Had a short dig around on this. It seems the idea was floated months ago.
But the reality is that it won't be anything like teh scaremongers are making out. The wording is so vague as to be meaningless.
A 20 year old car is not going to be scrapped because its brake pads are worn out. That is simply ridiculous.

Add to that the age of cars in some EU countries. Average car age in Spain is 15 years, Germany 10, France somewhere between the 2.
No govt is going to be popular with its population if the worst case scenario were to be implimented.

I fully expect this is all about something to scrap cars that are genuinely knackered and beyond saving. I saw a reference that there are many such vehicles being sent to countries which have very lax rules (if any) on car condition/safety. And part of the legislation is to stop that trade.

Ultimately, don't worry or get over excited about it. It will be fine.

Dig a bit deeper Clive! We should be concerned about, and resist any proposed legislation which is potentially 'wedge shaped'.

It is the stated intent of organisations such as the WEF and C40 (currently chaired by that odious sidiq khan) that the populations should all be encouraged to migrate to the cities where they will be constrained by the '15 minute' limitations deemed to provide us with sufficient 'independence' and them sufficient control. Oxford has already embraced this, and other cities such as Birmingham, Bath and London with their 'clean air zones' and ULEZ schemes have nothing whatsoever to do with improving air quality.

Meanwhile, a state of perpetual war in other folks' back yards will keep the industrial military congressional complex (to give it Eisenhower's originally intended title) running to keep the involved wealthy rich, and the poor culled!

But we had a similar thing about 15 years ago, I even ended up in the local paper. That was the proposal that classic cars had to be totally original. And of course, many many of ours are not, from aftermarket wheels, to trackerjack brakes and more. And that fizzled out, just as this will.
Whenever the EU or indeed MSUK a few years ago come up with what should be a sensible idea, it is badly worded (by the proposers, who know what they mean but nobody else does) and it gets misinterpreted. Until something more concrete appears, ignore it.

(my MSUK reference was to when they proposed that more than 1 car from an MSUK club travelling together needed a permit. That wasn't the case at all, but the clumsy wording implied that)

Pardon my cynicism, but owning a car which I bought new in January 1998, in good faith that it passed all the then current type approvals and emissions criteria, I now find myself in the situation of not being able to drive it in certain cities and towns of the UK, despite paying the annual excise licence fee, without being obliged to pay a further tax of upwards of £12/day in each because it is now arbitrarily determined to be 'dirty'. Thankfully, I don't actually live in such a town (yet) but close enough to one of the cities for it to be inconvenient. They of course have chosen alternative criteria to determine its level of 'dirtiness' to those used by the DVLA, because the DVLA actually decree it to be 'clean' when compared to most other vehicles currently on the road!

Legislation applied retrospectively such as this is almost unheard of in UK law, especially at a regional level, and for them to do so on the spurious claim of air quality when we now enjoy the cleanest air for several centuries is fundamentally offensive.

I therefore do not share your optimism that if we ignore these suggested proposals they will just go away.

By the time the Youtube vid you posted appeared it was already 3rd or 4th hand.

With much wringing of hands and weeping, shock/horror from all the tinfoil hat brigade that reposted it. Don't get me wrong, I watch "Geoff buys cars" who had this a full week earlier and he's a decent bloke, very well informed but not very selective and a tad alarmist.

I'm sorry but it another senseless and useless EU proposal (remember we're not IN the EU anymore?) from an undisclosed and dubious source, so until there's more concrete evidence of anything, from somewhere more reliable than a bloke somewhere posting it, i'm not gonna get my knickers in a knot about it.

There's little doubt that governments and quangos everywhere would love to get us all out of private transport and back onto Shanks' mare and this may be one more attempt to slip it past us. But if it is, they've already lost the gamble, it's been tumbled, so i'm not worrying! Even the French wouldn't go for this!
