Braided hoses for Trackerjack kit
Braided hoses for Trackerjack kit
I am possibly overthinking this, or misunderstanding as I am not that technically-minded, but am trying to work out what hoses I need to order for a TJ brake conversion.
The notes that I have seem to suggest either:
A) standard Dolomite braided hoses from the brake lines to the bracket, and then a bespoke 195mm hose with 10mm male convex at one end and 3/8 UNF female 90 degree swivel at the other, or
B) one single 375mm hose with a 10mm short male at one end and 3/8 UNF male long with a washer and nut at the other.
Is that correct?
Are there any major advantages of one vs the other?
Thanks all.
Mark

Re: Braided hoses for Trackerjack kit
A single hose, were you to make one, would have to be bespoke, as no manufacturer makes a hose with a metric fitting at one end and imperial at the other!
But in any case, a single hose is not really workable as there is too much suspension travel and steering movement to make such a single hose practical, it'd be bound to rub or foul somewhere under some extreme of operation. Modern cars that use such convoluted hoses nearly always have a grommeted support bracket halfway through their length.
A different approach is to relocate the body side hose end bracket for the flexi a lot further back, aft of the axle centreline by the same amount it is now forward of that line and then fit a shorter hose direct to the caliper. The imperial/metric mismatch still applies, but a full metric hose could be used, as a bespoke hard line TO the flexi would now be needed and it'd be just as easy to make THIS hard line metric at the flexi end.
As most people know, I have had hoses made that use the Standard flexi in the standard position and merely bridge the gap previuosly filled by a short hard line between caliper and flexi. These have been through several years of development and modification to end up with a handed pair that have a 90 degree angled hard end at both ends and a handed 120 degree offset that is opposite for each side so it's not twisted in service. This complication to avoid the above mentioned chafing created by a straight union end in the caliper, the curve of the hose fouls the top wishbone on or near 1 full lock each side, made worse if the car is lowered, which alters the top wishbone angle.
These are the hoses i've had made.

The bad news is, i'm out of stock! It's been more than 2 years since I last ordered any, they are getting increasingly expensive (isn't everything?) and the guy who makes them for me is in his eighties!
HOWEVER, I still have my patterns and i've had enough enquiries in the last few weeks to make it worth ordering several more sets and even find an alternative supplier if necessary (the guy might have retired by now, or worse)
As a rough guide, the last batch sold at £65 a pair (including UK postage) but time and suppliers will only make them costlier.
At the moment all I can say is leave it with me for a couple of days and i'll see what I can come up with and report back here.
Steve

Steve, Claire his daughter is continuing the family business and they relocated to new premises a couple of years ago, so I don't think they're going anywhere soon.
I have a set of three new Goodridge braided hoses for a Sprint if anyone is interested; £65

Same number as far as I know...
I'll put the hoses aside for you.

Steve - thanks for this. I definitely need a pair, so if you are able to procure some fairly soon and save me the risk of ordering the wrong hoses, I would be delighted to get them from you.
Cheers.

Re: Braided hoses for Trackerjack kit
I’ve got the parts for a slightly different solution using braided hoses and unions from Car Builder Solutions…
At the body, braided hose imperial male connector
Braided hose that’s as long as the other 2 hoses.
Through a grommet in the original hose bracket (not sure of the best orientation).
At the calliper, braided hose M10 banjo connector with copper washers
This retains the original route (see Steve’s suspension movement comment), solves the imperial to metric issue, eliminates one connector, uses braided hoses rather than rubber and only costs a few quid. The banjo gives you the 90 degree bend and you can rotate it to the most suitable position.

If you use A then you keep the original brackets in their original positionsCovsprint wrote: ↑Fri Mar 15, 2024 1:45 pm I am possibly overthinking this, or misunderstanding as I am not that technically-minded, but am trying to work out what hoses I need to order for a TJ brake conversion.

Re: Braided hoses for Trackerjack kit
Sorry it's taken so long, but life has been extra chaotic lately!
Ok, so i've managed to track down my supplier and they are still able to make the hoses. No price as yet, as I need to send the patterns in which i'll do before the weekend to get a quote at current prices. i'll pass this on as soon as I know. In the meantime, if anyone else is interested in acquiring a pair of these well researched and proven hoses, could you let me know here or by PM so I know how many sets to order!

Re: Braided hoses for Trackerjack kit
I bought and fitted a set of Carledos braided hoses a few years ago and can't rate them highly enough.
I think I mentioned this a in a post a few years ago - don't be a wally like me - they're handed, trying to get the wrong side to fit will lead to swearing and thrown spanners. As soon as you pick up the one for the correct side it literally falls into place!
They look very similar when side by side on a work bench is my only excuse!

Because of your problem (and you weren't alone) I now include a reminder about them being handed in the parcel!Aleco wrote: ↑Fri Mar 29, 2024 10:06 am I bought and fitted a set of Carledos braided hoses a few years ago and can't rate them highly enough.

I'd label them RH and LH in the packing, but I can never remember, just looking at them on the bench, which is which!
Steve
PS, Thanks for the compliment!

Re: Braided hoses for Trackerjack kit
Hi all, I'm pleased to announce that the braided TJ conversion hoses are back in stock.
There has, of course, been a price rise of slightly over 10% to me and onward insured postage is up by better than 30% over last year (think we are all paying for the Horizon debacle) Which means the total cost is now £75 per pair including UK postage.
PM me if you'd like a pair (Mark, I've PM'd you separately)
Cheers, Steve
