I very much doubt they would ever have been cork. That would require a recess as it doesn't like being compressed hard
However, my experience with genuine sump gaskets for OHV cars (I bought a "box" of 20, now all gone) is that they are probably 4x thicker than those currently available.
However, they work just fine as long as the sump is checked and flat. I use a file to highlight high spots once I have dressed any obvipous stuff. And I use a smear of sealer both sides of the gasket. Emphasis on smear, not bog gobs of it.
Plan b would be to buy some good thick gasket paper and make yoiur own. A friend makes his own gaskets whe building gearboxes as teh normal stuff is so poor.
