Sprint Prop Shaft CV Joint Rubber Boot

#1 Post by Philip Larmour »

Has anyone been able to find a supplier for the Sprint Prop Shaft CV boot?

We can readily find companies in Australia to recondition the CV joint itself, but they all fit drive shaft rubber boots as part of the overhaul process. The result is because the prop shaft rotates considerable faster than drive shafts, the rubber boot disintergrates as a result of the higher rotational speed.

I approached the folk who remanufactured the quarter light seals for us about costs for the Sprint gear lever gaiter, which they could do, but the cost of tooling seemed prohibitive at the time due to limited demand.

It’s likely they could produce the prop cv boot and it’s possibly more viable because many props of the time used similar, if not identical joints, and an economy of scale would come into play. However, we’d need a good pattern for them to measure…

Put two more on your list for the Gear lever gaiter Alan
It isn't Orange!!!!!!
The other one wasn't Purple either!!!
One of the new ones will probably be green, very green.
Another new one is green too but not as green as the previous one. Still pretty green. No, now it's Blue.
The other new one will be white with stripes. Actually it might not. No, it will be.
BUT, that one is definitely Yellow :=}

This is doing my head in, trying to think of another car with the same prop shaft CV joint!

The best I can come up with is a Ford Capri, but I don’t imagine they will be a source of boots
given that their one is held in place by cap head screws rather than a steel band.
I actually have a Capri prop here so will investigate in the daylight

Spitfire 1500 is a possibility. Same era/manufacturer
When I visited Feltham Propshafts to balance a prop, I had a chat with the bloke and he reckoned changing them was something they could do. As I had just replaced my centre bearing on my dolly prop (with a genuine Transit version)

If they are the same part as the Sprint boot then it is most likely NLA as well.

As per my original post the replacement needs to be a tailshaft CV boot not a FWD drive shaft boot. It is the rotational speed of the tailshaft that destroys the FWD boots.

If a replacement one can be found i will take three boots.

Yes, I agree, but at least it creates a greater market for a remanufactured product thereby making economy of scale more viable.

To progress remanufacture we ideally need a NOS item...or at very least a very good condition used item...from which a pattern can be reverse engineered.

I am going to bump this back to the top of topics again.

We still require the Sprint tailshaft CV boost if anyone can help, I have 4 tailshafts sitting here needing boots.

thanks

I have a Spitfire propshaft here which appears to have the same CV joint (subject to precise measurements) on it which I hope will provide a decent enough used boot as a pattern for reverse engineering...I just need to find time to take it apart!

A recent parallel post has timely reminded me...

Sounds hopeful, we wait in anticipation. :D
