Valve stem seals

#1 Post by Adder57 »

The question is can you change them with the head on. The manual says to remove the rocker shaft by undoing the 5 head bolts and the rocker bolts. Will this damage the head it does say anything about loosening all the bolts, has anyone done this before. Also what are the best seals to buy, some say there are bad ones on the market. Regards adder .

Sprint?

I'm not aware of an easy method of doing this with the head on as you'd need to remove the valve spring/cap/collets in order to get the new stem seal over the shaft of the valve. Potentially, I suppose you could use the 'rope trick' to support the head of each valve whilst you compress the spring, but you'd also most likely have compromised the water jacket by removing the just the head studs...and wouldn't be able to correctly torque down the head afterwards if the bolts had been untouched...

Thanks for replying, it's always good get someone else's view on it. I thought that about re tightening the head, but in manual just says undo then re torque. I didn't really want to take the head off if possible because so many have told me it's a pig to re seat properly. Any ideas about were to get the seals from. Adder.I

Valve stem seals are the same as Morris Cooper S, MG Midget, etc, (BMC A series engines).
