Chrome locking fuel cap adaptation - YES, IT WORKS!

#1 Post by TillyTheToledo1995 »

I’ve noticed some people (myself at first included ) have had a bit of a pickle finding locking chrome caps to fit their Toledo/Dolomite. So, after some research and carefully measuring the inner lug (the three prong style parts that secure it onto the inner of the upper filler neck - The serrated part that has the three grooves to fit the three lug setup) - I found that the measurements from lug to long measure out at 39mm and the fourth “locking lug” (the one that locks it into place on the filler neck). Please observe all the measurements that are on the below photo carefully.

So, I searched on eBay for a one that had the three lugged plate that had the same 39mm diameter. However, the actual chrome locking cap itself was A) Quite worn and pitted and B) Only had one key. I managed to find another chrome locking cap that was in good order with a functioning key cap cover, though this one had only a two lug inner plate and a curved locking lug. It didn’t fit, I tried it. So what I done was transfer the inner plate that had the three lugs and the straight uncurved locking lug into the cap that was in good order and Hey Presto! It worked. Just make sure the 39mm diameter is just that, as the measurements are oh so crucial! Also, make sure the rubber gasket is vented!

I know some owners have had issue finding a locking cap, so I’m hoping this just may help someone. Photos attached and a photo of the final result on the car!
