2x Triumph Gearboxes, free

#1 Post by Latham_F2 »

I've had a couple of Triumph 4-speed gearboxes in my shed for a while now, I'm looking to get rid of the shed so they have to go.
They came from a mate's TVR Vixen rebuild so originally from a 2000/2500/TR6.
Might be useable on a Dolly? Internals only? Not sure.

One (I think) used to have overdrive, but it was removed for use on his other box; it's been loosely reassembled with the extension piece instead.
I think at least one is a 3-rail.

They were in good condition when stored, but they've been in my shed for a few years so assume some refurb required, or use as exchange item.
It would be a shame to scrap them if useful for a forum member.

Collection only from Formby, near Liverpool, evenings/weekends only.

Pictures on request.

Tony.

The Sprint gearbox is closely related to, but not the same as,the big 6 gearbox. Other Dolomite gearboxes bear no resemblance.

I must be getting old as I can't remember his name, but Mick or Mike somebody in Coventry, who rebuilds gearboxes for all Triumphs, was pleased to buy an unknown quality TR6 overdrive gearbox off me for a considerable sum. And he collected! Might be a better bet.

No doubt somebody will turn up with better info!

If I recall, it was an early 'A' type 'box that Mike Papworth bought from you; you may have thought it a tidy sum, but I had to source a replacement 'A' type gearbox casing for my TR6 over 20 years ago and I can tell you he had a bargain with your's!!

Apart from the longer input shaft on the Sprint 'box and the actual ratios, they are identical to the late TR6 and 2000/2500 and Stag 'boxes

OK, now i'm cross about it!

So the box is the same apart from nearly everything inside it? 8)

Hmm. So they _might_ be valuable but still nobody wants them?

Do you have photographs, or gearbox numbers maybe?

I'll have to dig them out from under all the other junk in the shed - will try to upload some tomorrow.

The gearbox number prefix letters may assist in identifying their origins...

OK, so it wasn't exactly next day, but I finally managed to move enough junk out of the shed to get to the gearboxes.
They both seem to be three rail. One has a shorter input shaft than the other; one HAD an overdrive but that was used on Brian's TVR and it's been reassembled with the standard 4-speed bits left over from that.

I think they probably originated in Triumph 2000/2500...?

They do seem to have suffered somewhat in my (leaky) shed, so I'd advise a rebuild before attempting to use them.
Or, ideal for use as exchange units when buying a replacement item.

(Most of the rust you can see in the pics came from the trolley, which had been slowly rusting away underneath them and collapsed completely when I tried to move it!)

They'll be going for scrap soon, unless somebody has any interest in them.

Tony.
