Intermediate steering shaft - 157659

#1 Post by Llessur »

My 1850 has got quite a lot of play in the steering, it seems to be pretty evenly split between the lower joint and the upper joint which is attached to the intermediate shaft.

I can rebuild the lower joint or replace it with the T2000 UJ, but I'm having trouble finding a source of a new intermediate shaft. Everywhere seems to be sold out.

Does anyone have any tips on where I might find one or what an alternative might be? The part number is 157659.

Cheers.

I can suggest an alternative....

You can buy the joints and shafts from kit car suppliers
such as Car Builder Supplies.

The spline size is 9/16" x 36.

The shafts CBS sell are 250mm so will need shortening for your Dolomite.
It is necessary to weld a sleeve to join the two cut sections, CBS also sell these.
(Please see page 24 of the CBS catalogue Issue 37)

Please only use the forged T2000 UJs , not the inferior pressed ones.

Thanks

It's quite unusual for this upper joint to develop play (though not impossible) the reverse is the normal cause for replacement, they seize up if left still for prolonged periods!

But a swift tip, what appears to be play in this upper joint is often wear in the bush in the bulkhead. Check this carefully before you go mad buying or fabricating another intermediate shaft. Poly bushes are available for this part as the stock ones wear quickly. Chris Witor's Superflex version is recommended, available from the man himself or through the club.

Looking more closely at the CBS catalogue there is actually an easier option than cutting the shaft and welding on a sleeve,
namely which is to use their DD shaft......
They sell forged joints with 9/16" spline on one side and DD on the other,
the shaft itself can be cut with a hacksaw and then using a file have grooves for pinch bolts added.

Thanks both for your replies - I've replaced the bulkhead bush with a poly one and it's certainly helped stop the whole steering column from wobbling around. There is definitely some play in that upper joint, not masses but it's definitely there. I've managed to source a (hopefully) good second hand replacement locally so I'll give that a go to start off with.

The lower joint is shot and accounts for most of the play - I was going to rebuild with the kit of small bushes but having dismantled it the holes in the central plate are noticeably elongated (I presume due to wear and that's not a factory thing) so the new forged UJ is the way to go. I've ordered one from CW and it's currently on the way to me.

I've also splashed out on a set of poly steering rack bushes and new track rod ends so, barring any significant wear to the rack itself, that should hopefully tighten things up to a much better state than it's in now.

Will update when it's all back together.
