Quick question: there is a short'ish right angled hose that fits at the back by the two heater hoses. Does anyone know what it officially called or know of a part number for it?

Found it, ordered it together with the oil filter and another hose. May all be sorted next weekend??

You don't need a cooling system if you limit the first start up to 15-30 seconds*, probably longer on an iron top. It is a total PITA to fit the whole damn lot back on only to find there's something amiss and you have do drain & strip it again. Say for example the wrong head gasket hadn't been spotted, the car doesn't run and then someone spots the gasket from your photo. From where you are now the head could be off again in 10-15 minutes vs an hour when starting from scratch. Plus you've wasted a fill of coolant and everything is wet again as you strip it down.
*Exception, never do this if your cam is brand new.

Hmm, hadn't thought about doing that. Makes sense I suppose. Ok, jobs for Saturday: sort the tappets, chuck the battery on and start the bugger up.

Whoohoo! She runs! Well, ran. Something seems amiss in the carb department. My steam engine mate popped over to make sure I didn't kill it and he has taken the carb away to go over it and rebuild if necessary. The tappets will need to be readjusted and a new choke cable obtained. Other than that, she's a good 'un.

Nothing very exciting today, just painting some bits and bobs and getting various hose clips sorted out. Oh, also stripped the headling off such things as sunvisors, etc. Now all ready for wiping with meths and then painting.

Indeed and the sooner the better tbh. Hmm, the colour will remain satin black for now but the vaguely hopeful plan would be to return to its original damsoney goodness when the weather improves.

Have you considered painting the car with Rustoleum? With an, ahem, roller?! Surprisingly good results are possible and it is excellent forgiving paint. Easy to apply panel by panel too.
Might be worth contacting Mat T on this forum, as he painted his Toyota van using this method and it looks good.

Yesterday saw some cleaning up of the various housings which were somewhat coated with limescale internally. Much better now. Also painted the rocker cover in an aluminium finish ready for fitting once I have re-adjusted the tappets again and painted the thermostat cover which to be honest is somewhat pitted around where the hose fits.
The aim for Sunday will be to fit as much of the cooling plumbing as possible (inc radiator). Just have to wait for the 3 bolts for the housing still but they should be here in a couple of days. Then replenish the coolant, fit the carb and choke cable. Get her running and take her to my mates place for some final fettling.
