I'm looking at doing at a night time one at the moment if peeps would be up for it

Many Thanks
Darren
If maggie is suffering from reduced (or non existent) valve clearances there are only 2 possibilities, 1) they were deliberately set this way to shut the noise up or 2) you are getting valve seat recession from lack of lead in the petrol.Essexwriter wrote:Count me in. Now I've discovered why Maggie couldn't do hills (valve clearances? What valve clearances?) she's going like a stabbed rat. Night time driving would be a treat.
Cheers,

Normally, on a healthy engine, the valve clearances do not alter much in service but any variation will be the other way, ie the clearances will get bigger with time and lead to rattly tappets (a misnomer as a tappet is actually what we now call a cam follower, it's a hangover from sidevalve days when the adjustment was in the follower)Essexwriter wrote:Cheers Steve. I'll keep an eye on it.
When I checked them, some were set okayish, others had dropped. But it is at least 9k miles since they were done - and the change was significant when I did it. She's back where she was when I bought her.
She does sound a bit fruitier out if the exhaust, admittedly.
I'll check the paperwork, but I think she was converted a while back.
Cheers,
Ben
Thanks Steve. I'll give it a month or two and then check them over.Carledo wrote: Normally, on a healthy engine, the valve clearances do not alter much in service but any variation will be the other way, ie the clearances will get bigger with time and lead to rattly tappets (a misnomer as a tappet is actually what we now call a cam follower, it's a hangover from sidevalve days when the adjustment was in the follower)
If they are still shrinking then I have to doubt the veracity of the paperwork. Since you now have them set correctly you can monitor progress scientifically. My instincts say someone was robbed but i've been wrong before..........
