I could have done with someone in the car with me shooting video and with me running up and down the line to get all cars in. Really need more space to do that ideally so we could also look at another route outside London for another trip. Certainly up for a night run though. Maybe start at the Ace and run in reverse ( not literally as I can't get overdrive in reverse although it would be an interesting mod ) and finishing up somewhere for a late night coffee.

Count me in. Now I've discovered why Maggie couldn't do hills (valve clearances? What valve clearances?) she's going like a stabbed rat. Night time driving would be a treat.

Cheers,

Ben

Amazing what you learn when you read the Haynes Manual

Tell you what, I'll look at your valves when you look at my steering!

Took her to south London and on to Surrey today. Not a hitch. Hell, she's even starting up on the first turn of the key once more 8)

If maggie is suffering from reduced (or non existent) valve clearances there are only 2 possibilities, 1) they were deliberately set this way to shut the noise up or 2) you are getting valve seat recession from lack of lead in the petrol.
Best keep an eye on them in the coming months, if they continue to shrink, its time for an unleaded conversion. An old engine will maintain "lead memory" for years but if the valves have been ground in during a decoke or similar, the memory will be destroyed and reccession will set in fairly quickly. You can try putting lead replacement jollop in the tank (one step away from snake oil IMO) but a conversion is the only safe, permanent solution.

Cheers Steve. I'll keep an eye on it.

When I checked them, some were set okayish, others had dropped. But it is at least 9k miles since they were done - and the change was significant when I did it. She's back where she was when I bought her.

She does sound a bit fruitier out if the exhaust, admittedly.

I'll check the paperwork, but I think she was converted a while back.

Cheers,

Ben

Mind you Steve, some of those valves are clearly newer than the others - the ones on No 4 cylinder at least, if not one other on No 3 cylinder are clearly in fresher condition.

Hi Ben....check the paperwork, I know there's tonnes to look through, but she has deffo had the conversion or at least there are reciepts to say she had the work done. I put very little faith in the garage Maggie's original owner used. I got the feeling that they saw the poor old boy coming and charged him a lot for very little work - but I must admit I never had any issue's with her mechanicals.

Oh - and a re-run of this tour would be something I'd be well up for; afraid I had my Gran's funeral on the last one so couldn't make it.

Thanks James,

I was pretty sure I'd seen the receipt for that work - though was going to check as I know how my memory plays tricks on me!

She's running like a dream now I've reset the valve clearances. It was probably time to do them - she's on 98k miles now. She hasn't been idle :-)

Hope to see you on the next London jaunt.

Cheers,

Ben

Normally, on a healthy engine, the valve clearances do not alter much in service but any variation will be the other way, ie the clearances will get bigger with time and lead to rattly tappets (a misnomer as a tappet is actually what we now call a cam follower, it's a hangover from sidevalve days when the adjustment was in the follower)
If they are still shrinking then I have to doubt the veracity of the paperwork. Since you now have them set correctly you can monitor progress scientifically. My instincts say someone was robbed but i've been wrong before..........

Thanks Steve. I'll give it a month or two and then check them over.

My only query is why the inlet valves would recede as well as the exhaust valves (I'm probably being ignorant here - forgive me). A number of both kinds had lost their clearances, and some of each had kept them. Some were secured more tightly than others too - took quite a lot of grunt to loosen the adjusting nuts. Wish I'd noticed whether the tighter nuts belonged to valves that had kept their clearances!
