Ahh, good point - I did melt the test tube to the bench in chemistry class a long time ago, luckily it didn't explode. Must've been close though!

It didn't work for me. I left them in for 24 hours and then another 24 hours. A small patch cleared which was right at the bottom of the bucket but it didn't do anything else and the pistons were still stuck solid. I think maybe the garage is too cold.

I got another pair from the attic and the pistons came out fairly easily with the old hammer & screwdriver method. Another set of old core for Alun.

Yep. Not bad, quick removal but a fair bit of dust (obviously). It does leave a decent finish though (no gouging). Needs DAing afterwords. Wears out quicker than I'd like. But yes, for large areas it's pretty good. Tad expensive though.

Jon the sprayer came around yesterday to assess the Dolly. The headlining needed to come out so he can knock the dents out. I showed him the front foot wells and he agreed they needed to be replaced. I was going to make a start on them but I've decided to let him do it, I'm sure I'll mess it up. Colin & Ken provided me with a pair of good second hand ones.


Mary took the headlining out and gave it a quick wipe over.




The paint removal is just about complete. Just need to get the remainder around the door frames.








Crusty all along the join where the rear panel meets the boot floor. Jon will cut all that out and weld a strip in.


Coated the bare metal with a thin coat of etch primer to keep the rust away as the car won't be going to the spray shop for a week or so.

After speaking with Jon I've decided to get a new pair of outer cills. The existing ones are holed in several places along the bottom edge and, although he can repair them, he said the metal will be thin in other places and by the time he'd cut it all out and let new metal in it would be quicker to put new ones on.

Mart, what are you going to do about the headlining?

How do you fancy using my trick of painting with vinyl silk emulsion? It gives excellent results and an almost factory finish. You need to clean the headlining using meths. A couple of goes usually does the trick. Leave for a couple of days and then lightly roller using the small rollers that you can get from a popular DIY store. The fuzzy type are best. a small, good quality brush is good for the seams so that they don't get overloaded with paint. The grain of the headlining comes through clearly despite using a couple of coats. The glue staining is simply eradicated. I've done this now about 4 times on different Triumphs and as mentioned, the results are excellent. Plus you get to use the original headlining material.

Works a treat. Use a lamb wool roller that used on a smooth surface - the pile is not very long.

Yep, that looks like the way to go. The way Mary did it before worked out quite expensive for the small pots of fabric paint.

In Dutchieland i use a cabrio vinyl spray paint. One can is enough for one headlining. I Once had a 5 door Acclaim with a beige vinyl roof and sprayed it black and it stayed black the 5 years i had the car and it was bought by a friend who did drive it another three years and still black. My guess was that the same spray, also available in white, was good enough for the inside and from then i used it in many cars. A few euro's a nice white headlining and as it is paint never the brown glue area's again.

The make is MHW paint and then use the cabrio vinyl spray.
